The perfect carbon/aluminum marriage.

The new 60s were inspired by Zipp's proven 58mm hoops that have claimed countless victories around the world. Zipp took its tried-and-tested aerodynamic carbon technology developed with its 303 and 404 wheelsets, and it combined a new hub design and predictable aluminum braking surface. The result is a durable, highly versatile carbon clincher available at a reasonable price. It's the perfect wheelset for racing, training, and for those who just want a solid aerodynamic carbon wheel at a good price. With a construction that places an overall emphasis on durability, the 60 ensures that you'll spend more time out riding and less time worrying about your wheels.

The new wheels were designed with Zipp's proven aerodynamic principles, using what Zipp calls a 'hybrid toroidal' rim. It uses its Multi-Material Co-Molding process that permanently fuses a sub-200-gram aluminum hoop to a dimpled carbon structure that acts as a leaf spring for road vibration and impacts. The next step in the process is the implementation of VCLC, which involves the insertion of a visco-elastic material between carbon laminates in the rim, which delivers a ten percent reduction in road vibration. When it came to carbon resin, Zipp faced obstacles in relation to applied heat. It found that clincher rims handle all of the air pressure along with the tire, resulting in catastrophic failure when over-heated. Part of the solution came from the development of the Firecrest Clincher rim shape, and the other came out of an exclusive deal with a Formula One carbon resin manufacturer. Together, they worked out a new resin that improves heat dissipation enough to pass European safety testing. Like Zipp's other wider-is-better wheel platforms, the familiar 58mm deep rim profile incorporates a relatively wide 23.5mm rim bed for stability, cornering grip, and overall ride comfort.

At the heart of the wheelset is its new hub design, which is 10- and 11-speed compatible. Because the overarching theme of the new wheelset emphasizes reliability, Zipp wanted to engineer a hub that was built to take a beating and keep on spinning as smoothly as the day the wheels arrived from the factory. To create such a hub, Zipp formed the shell from ultra-strong and lightweight 7075 T-6 aluminum. Stainless-steel bearings were then housed within the hubs, ensuring years of silky-smooth riding. Additionally, Zipp built the hubs with a 'precision set' design, meaning no pre-load adjustment is required -- simply fasten the quick-release skewers and hit the tarmac.

To ensure the wheels were able to handle the toughest road surfaces, Zipp laced the 60s with legendary Sapim CX-Ray spokes. These stainless steel ovalized spokes are far and away the best in the industry. They're lighter than most round butted spokes, and the coining process used to produce their aerodynamic shape makes them stronger and very durable. They are anchored to the rims with Sapim alloy nipples. With 18 spokes up front and 20 in the rear, the wheels are plenty stiff for racing yet still provide a comfortable ride.

The Zipp 60 Clincher Road Wheels are available in Black with White decals. You'll need to select between Campagnolo or Shimano/SRAM compatible freehub options. They come with rim strips and Zipp steel skewers.

Poor Quality Wheel Set!

On Feburary 19, 2015 I bought a set of Zipp 60 clincher rims under order number c2115267087. Unfortunately, I have been having a very bad time with the spokes on the rear Shimano wheel in that set. It seems to have a habit of going out of true after every 20 miles.

Let me explain that I have very low mileage on this rim set. I've done two crits which were about 20 miles each, two club group rides which were 30 miles each, two solo rides on the group ride circuit at 30 miles each, another solo ride that was 65 miles, and one leisurely ride
at the shore which was 30 miles. All together I have 255 miles on this Zipp 60 rim set.

During this time I have had to get the rear rim re-trued 3 times. The first time was by a local bike shop that my bike club has a deal with. He did this as a favor to me for free so I do not have a receipt for this work. The second time was at another local bike shop, Marty's Reliable in Randolph, NJ. which I do have a receipt for. The third time was by a friend at the shore who trues better then any bike shop I've ever been to. He was able to get the wheel completely straight and he used a Park Tool tension meter using the Zipp 60 PDF service manual's tension guide. This last truing was done a few days ago and the next day I went on the leisurely group ride at the shore were the wheel went out of true only 20 miles into the ride. One spoke almost completely backed out and was so loose it started rattling. I spoke to the owner of the Beachwood Bikes, bike shop at the shore as well as my friend who trued it and they both recommended that I pursue a warranty claim.

This is a very expensive wheel to have developed such a serious problem at only 255 miles in. I am not happy as the summer is here in full swing and I can not enjoy this new wheel set as I hoped to have. I was led to believe that ZIPP was a quality company and that this wheel set was a safe purchase. As of now this purchase is an extreme aggravation.

I have contacted Competitive Cyclist about my problem. It was a week ago that I spoke with Amanda Batty. She sent me a warranty form to fill out and send back. I sent the warranty info back to warrantybike@backcountry.com last Monday July 27th 2015 along with photos of the rim in question, the warranty number on the box, and the receipt of the truing at Marty's Reliable bike shop. I didn't hear back for a whole week. Just today on August 3rd I called competitive cyclist toll free number and was told that Amanda Batty was on the phone and that I could not be placed on hold to wait. I noticed in an email that I had her direct extension so I called that number. I was able to speak with her right away however she was not helpful. She would not give out the number to the warranty department. I told her that I sent the warranty info to warrantybike@backcountry.com last week but didn't get a response. She told me that I should just send it again. I asked if I could have the number to reach them at so I could "follow up" to make sure they received my email the second time. She told me no, she would not give me their number. I don't understand how I am to know if they got my warranty information, if they do not get back to me.

I am posting this as a review, and I'm going to contact SRAM directly and let them know what is going on.

Very good hoops for training and racing

This is Zipp's entry-level carbon wheelset, but the aluminum braking surface makes this wheel somewhat unique in the product line-up. If one is concerned about braking on steep descents, and the thought of a tire blow-out or activating the brake and having nothing happen is scary, these are the answer. But the Firecrest represents the most aero wheels in the Zipp line--the 60s are one generation removed from the best in that respect. So one star off for that.

These wheels, or any deep carbon wheel, won't produce huge increases in speed. Commuters will find it hard to justify the cost. But racers are at a competitive disadvantage to those who use deeper section carbon wheels. How many watts of energy saved is difficult to estimate because it varies based on wind angle and speed (plus Zipp doesn't have aero data for these wheels up). If the Zipp 60s save 10 watts, that's a fairly negligible amount of mph but HUGE difference in effort. Making someone else work 10 watts harder might be just enough to push them past their limits.

As for weight, the 60s aren't the lightest but they are comparable to similar offerings by, say, Campagnolo. They aren't a particular liability on rollers or moderate climbs. The aero benefit disappears only on really long climbs at 7% or more, like the Alpe d'Huez. If one is frequently climbing up Mt Washington these won't be the best choice. But they're a fine all-purpose wheel.

These generally handle well in crosswinds, but sudden hard gusts particularly at speed can be scary. If wind is a concern, go with a shallower front wheel.

The max recommended rider weight from Zipp directly on this wheelset is 250lbs. Please keep in mind that this is usually the total weight including that of the bike as well.

Was wondering what proper tube stem size to use for these rims? And, are there stem extentions provided when purchased?

If you check the drop down menu there should be three options, Front, Campagnolo, and Shimano. The Front option is just the front wheel and the other two options are rear wheel options depending on the set up you need.
