+1 for Greg and COTY! His career was inspiring, spectacular and seminal. Turns out he was right all along but unfortunately didn't always use prudence in how he conveyed his concerns. Great choice!

Sorry to be a detail person, but it wasn't ABC, it was CBS Sports with John Tesh and Phil Liggett. This is important because I had just turned 15 and I had decided that cycling was my new sport of choice and those Sunday afternoons changed my life. Tesh wrote, performed and produced all the music in those days and just hearing them brings back many memories of my early cycling days. While I think LeMond is way too thin skinned, he was my hero and remains an icon of cycling. I kept two posters from that era and had them framed: 1) Avocet Cyclo computers with a shot of LeMond and Hinault and 2) LeMond on the Champs-Élysées in 89. I have my LeMond road bike still in use as a fixed gear. LeMond is the man.

I like how, immediately after posting that wildly over-inclusive "The Most Hated Buzzword" list, the blog's author unironically uses the phrase "went viral."

Greg LeMond is my hero, period. He is the reason I ever started riding. Although not yet a cyclist, I thought he was just about the coolest thing I had ever seen when (through my good fortune) I watched as ABC televised the 1985 Paris-Roubaix. In a post race interview, his face was totally covered with mud but that huge smile beaming through! I was hooked! By the way, he finished 4th !!

Heard Phil White approached Brendan Quirk about selling Cervélo, but ran into backcountry veto. Really hope there bikes don't suffer with 'Pon Holdings' acquisition. LOVE my R3, S2 and P4. Best bikes on Earth with Lifetime warranty!

Sad to see you trying to pimp Jered, but perhaps not since Competitive is the place for posers - all words and no PRO, in your own parlance. Jered is quite above this. Now send him some $$$ for posting his photo here. I doubt you did that, right?
How many tours did Lance win is the CAPTCHA? Gimmeabreak. Zero.

To be clear, Creed was referencing Vino and LBL not so much Doping directly. Your response makes it sound like he is primarily tackling doping.

Before there was the Internet and Mike Creed, however, there was Clark Sheehan - THE nicest guy in the US domestic peloton (and abroad) back in his day. If you have no idea who I'm talking about, here is a late-career profile: (oops - CC apparently censors weblinks - just Google "Clark Sheehan" and pick the cyclingnews dot com autobus profile link).
Seriously though - he was one of the nicest guys, the most under-rated of talents, and certainly one of the unluckiest. If only his chassis hadn't taken so many knocks, we could've seen what that motor truly was capable of putting out!

Lemond? Whiney, bitter, litigious, shady Lemond? Really? For 2011? A quarter of a century ago, sure but feels like misplaced nostalgia today given the many other, credible candidates.
Brilliant mention of the "Eating Spain" article. Absolutely amazing food options in cycling paradise.

Creed.....don't let him fool you, still a very competitive cyclist despite his bad back and hip. Raced against him for years as a Pro. I've never seen a guy that loves to attack as much as he does, he drove us guys nutz when he was younger. He hates to lose and when he is feeling good he can rip your legs off. He really loves cycling if you've ever had the chance to talk to him you would how much loves the sport.

Hey Rick, Eric here and I'm the 95 state champ that never received my medal. The person who kept my medal shall remain nameless. How I miss the roads of LR, living in Virginia Beach currently, transferred from Memphis 5 years ago.

@Santa, North Pole -- Andy Clark is now with Speedgoat, and BC will probably maintain both CC and RC. CC for people who get a rush out of paying a metric f*ckton for stuff and RC for people who want a better deal on the same stuff.

Greg Lemond cyclist of the year 2011? Interesting choice and rationale. He was a phenomenal racer and a real pioneer. There's every reason to believe that he would have been the first American to win 5 Tours were it not for his hunting accident. Of course, the same could be said about Fignon and his injuries. Imagine 3, 4 or 5 Tours waged in the fashion of 1989. Thanks for doing these always-interesting Year End Awards. Looking forward to part 2.

Keep the posts coming. Thank you!
As for Lemond, it's great to see people revisiting his past in the sport, and thus seeing his value, which perhaps was eclipsed by other(s), if only momentarily. It's time that many others re-evaluate his value to American cycling. Very much looking forward to him possibly reviving the bike company as well. We'll see.
