Comments - A little ditty about Jacky Durand

January 06, 2011

Speaking of Calfee, an old bike of mine was repaired through them and after a one year it seems just as good as new. They even did an amazing job of touch-up paint around the repair area! I feel the image of the raw patch above isn't entirely indicative of how good their work can look. If it were under paint instead of a mostly clear-coated area (with a 12k weave vs. the 3k weave they use to repair it) you wouldn't know it. Even the new clear coat is indistinguishable from the old.

What was offered on the first 2 days of the 12 days of xmas promotion? I didn't get an email, so I missed those days.

@Chris - No need to cook the oats. They make little crunchy/chewy morsels, but nothing offensive.

I was there Flanders '92. Durand and Wegmuller on the Muur came past me, watched the finale in a bar. Thanks for the memories

Hey, quick question on your muffins - cooked or raw oats? Thanks!

A quick note on the grant of patents. (Unfortunately I stuck on through law school.) In times past, the patent office (in many countries) would vet patent applications. Over the past 20 years or so that position has changed - why spend money vetting an application (including the cost of employing people to vet applications) if a private plaintiff will do it for you? So the tendency is to grant and allow privately funded litigation to sort out whether the patent should in fact have been granted. I am surprised that the Canyon suit was even patially successful, but there's more than a hint of xenophobia in the response from the English speaking world. I can't help but feel that if the position had been reversed (i.e., had Cervelo held patent and sued Canyon) there'd be a lot less criticism levelled at the patent holder/the EPO.

Note Dudu's less than PRO (no, I don't like it either) front end - perhaps it was his cobbled classics set up, but at 8'32" you can see his quill stem is raised about 10cm from the top of the head tube. And those Castorama jerseys were hideous.

Thank you for that clip of Do the Right Thing. Also, that article about Cervélo vs. Canyon just goes to show how that patent should never have been granted. Not only was the whole thing "the prior art" anyway, but it's just so overly vague to begin with that it makes the whole patent process seem like a joke. I wonder if they could have patented seat tube that wasn't entirely round...

I used the service at Calfee myself as well. While re-coating the clear from tire rub on a hardtail mountain bike they left pinholes in the clear. Looked messy and not OEM. The worst part was the white bubbled area on the BB that THEY damaged and tried to blame on me. Why wouldn't I have asked to get that addressed also? These guys are butchers. The market is ripe for an ethical artist in composite to appear.

as usual you miss the point on NYVelocity message. It has been a consent excuse by Armstrong, his sponsors, his groupies, and SOME in the industry that if Armstrong goes down the sport will follow. NYVelocity is pointing out how absurd this attempted deflection is. As you are clearly smart this must be a case of willfull distortion

Dudu was great. I still remember one of his breakaways during the TDF being stopped by a train crossing. He stopped, smiled at the fans who rushed up, and began signing autographs - pure class & real PRO.

Jacky Durand is my hero. Don't be afraid of the break away, my friends, don't be afraid of the break away......

You always impress me with how little you know too... Still, good call on leaving law school. Too many lawyers with too much student loan debt and not enough jobs to go around. And re: the NYVelocity Twitter - there is undeniably a 'Cult of Lance' out there who would hang their bikes up tomorrow if he goes down. Those are no true fans, and it is those people that NYV is calling out.

RRVELO is a great repair show and they even do repainting to match Set in a Orbea ORCA and the frame returned was done to a very high level. Contact Edgar 831-278-2668

I had Calfee repair a surface issue on a top tube and wish I just junked the frame. Wasn't THAT clean and if I had to do it over... I would have saved my money.

Tubulars are cool, so too are loose bearings (both in hubs and BBs), but hand sanitizer. Are you kidding? Surely you jest?
- Tom, DC

November 30, 2010

Please, enough of the tiresome "PRO" cliche. Its even dumber than "curate" at this point. Just say you like something and why. But, awesome call out to the King of the Headbangers. So, more Jacky and no more Pro. M'kay?

Uh... Looks like you skimped on the paint with the frame repairs. Might have made all the difference. Regarless Calfee does great work. Have a few friends who've use his repair service.

Where exactly are you putting the hand sanitizer to be pro?

Don't like the Calfee paint job? Ruckus Components in Portland does magic w/ carbon repairs. Cool dudes to deal with too.

I don't think that's Steve in the Jogmate strip. He never rode a Steelman, at that time he had one of the only Colnago Dream CX bikes in the US... It was bitchin. Before that I remember him riding one of his old Alans...

Hand-sanitizer is PRO??!! I thought it was for weaklings with fragile immune systems. I bet Sean Kelly never used hand-sanitiser!

Personally, I wouldn't be TOO pissed about a Calfee patch on my Helium. Battle scars, ya know? You could always have it painted over anyway. Here's your Tilford pic: http://www.flickr.com/photos/spnsampling/3290460737/ Great face he's making in that photo.
