P.S. Speaking of Roubaix, how the He** didn't Danielson walk away with the Boulder Roubaix?

FYI I agree with your franken setup. I am an Ergo rider with a beer budget, so I have over the years refined my choices on mixing and matching drivetrains. I agree with your set-up of SRAM chain + Shimano Cassette, PC1070+CS6600 in my case. You would think the SRAM/SRAM (PC1050+OG1090) combo would work better but it doesn't shift s smoothly as the previous Cheers

Cancellara tore up the peloton in the last 40km! No one else in the photo! 6h35m for 260km. That is PRO.

Swearing? What's the problem? It's part of human discourse, for Christsake!. Deal with it. I thought we cyclists were a tougher breed. Don't forget your after-workout supplements, Sammy.

Wow! We( my wife and I) just got back from the Hill country of Texas. I've been riding there on vacation for 10 years or more. Wonderful place to ride- great quiet roads and good hills. The cattle guards can be very rough and some are smooth. What you really need to watch are the slick slabs-the creeks that flow over the cement are insanely slippery.Like on Loudon Road. Still my favorite place to ride.

There IS a 65-mile race in the Texas Hill Country (Luckenbach): http://www.redlicoriceevents.com/events/Ring_of_Fire.html A ride is also available for a 100-mile route. If the wind doesn't get you, the heat during the time of year probably will. Enjoy!

Never enough references to "Tony". One of my favorites of all time. / I happened across Rapha when they launched: I was searching the Internet (endlessly, it seemed) for an all-black kit. They had basically what I was looking for. Now, thousands of photographs later, I've got Rapha-fatigue in a big way, despite how excellent their stuff is (fact). / If Garm*n wins PR, I'll eat my chamois.

Uh, yeah. You don't just hang a Canyon out there on the blog without a comment. Even if you won't be carrying it, impressions would be nice.

Ah, yes the TX hill country. Soon to be my home. If you rode out there you probably rode past my grandparents ranch on Highway 16 just south of the Willow City turnoff, or if you were brave enough to ride FR965 past Enchanted Rock you drove past my parents ranch. Almost gave up cycling for golf, riding the Willow City Loop one hellacious afternoon. Came to my senses after chomping down some ClifBloks though. Hope you stopped at Knot in the Loop for a cold one after the ride.

Don't forget the stupidly steep climbs out here in Austin/ Hill country, where 15%+ is extremely common. Very similar to those in Fanders . Not all that long but boy do they hurt.

While the Rapha line has some panache, I'll be placing a considerable sum on the all-new upcoming Gucci Cycling Collection. Gucci from head to toe - now that's PRO!

Gotta say, I'm disappointed in the launch of Rapha's women's range. Thought for sure they could have sourced some hotter models.

As one who rides the Hell Country, oops meant Hill Country, enjoyed your post - you did a great job of describing the wind and the 15mph slog back in the last x miles of a long ride. Only forgot two things - chip seal roads and cars. Chip seal can shake parts off your bike (literally) and destroy tires in minutes. As for cars, you may not see many, but those you do can be hostile. Enjoy the roads but bring a friend to be safe in case Pinarello meets pickup as happens all too often in Hell Country. Bubba ain't always bike friendly.

Have you ever looked into Copperopolis? Battenkill? Rouge-Roubaix? Those are all difficult one-day races. Copperopolis has drawn Levi Liepheimer, Fast Freddy Rodriguez, and other big name domestic pro's. "Cobbled" streets, hair-raising descents, short steep climbs through canyons, etc. That race is truly deserving of your least favorite word....Dare I say it? "EPIC"

Beautiful post! If Cormac McCarthy rode a bike, I'd be more inclined to visit the relatives in Texas. That said, this post was pretty damned great and inspires me to re-think my next visit there... Tyler seems capable of evolving into the kind of rider that America's never had. A true classics contender. As for the other guy, sadly, I've given up on him. And in fact, I felt a burn when I heard his post-race comments...I can only hope he proves me wrong someday soon.

1) That Texas bit was inspired. You have got to feel good about that prose, man. This will be the first time I have every reposed somebody else's post. 2) No offense, but if you can drop our man Ben Lieberson, who is a stringy haired Rapha model, then you should upgrade.

You make it sound like Rapha jersey's with sectional gripper are the second coming of Christ, but there are plenty of other manufacturers out there who use the same technique. Sugoi makes their higher end jerseys in the same fashion - gripper on back, sans gripper on front. but then you would not extoll their virtues or make mention as you don't shill their product online like Rapha. I certainly get a kick out of you ceaselessly tongue in cheek biting the hand that feeds you however.

Thanks for adding some romance to what is normally just a reallyanother f'ng brutal day in the saddle here in the Hill Country. Two things one must know to survive a March here: 1) a knowledge of basic sailing techniques to create a smaller footprint 2) tree-lined backroads to hide out on when sh*t gets out of hand.

One thing to watch out for in the Shimano Ultegra-level cassettes ... they eat aluminum freehub bodies for breakfast. Best use the SRAM if you have AL freehub bodies in your wheels.

RE: Farrar. Yes, that's a big gap. But truly shows that basically NOBODY is a match for Cancey and Boonen physically. It will take a lot of smarts and a lot of luck to beat either of them at PR. Tyler Farrar's favorite song? 'Time is on my side'

"The downshifting (i.e. 17t to 16t) with a SRAM Doubletap rear shifter is flat-out fantastic." Actually, that's an upshift. As in cars, an upshift is to a higher gear; a downshift to a lower one. Let's not transpose them, hmm?

Flanders Qoute: "Bernhard Eisel was out in an earlier break and had a small lead going into the Molenberg. He knew the chase was close and recalled after the race hearing something behind him. “I thought, I’d better let this motorbike come by but when I turned around and looked it was Cancellara,” he told CyclingNews."

Yep, 12-23's rock, and I ride all day in a 53x18... Ronde on cyclingfans rocked (I watched the same feed) - Still get emails from cyclingTV even though I gave up my subscription years ago...What's up with that? By the way, Spartacus was so relaxed (seemingly - pokerface methinks) in the last 11K after the Bosberg - body on auto-pilot.
