The specs for the Easton EC90 Aero Carbon Clincher Wheelset have all the go-fast technical details -- 56mm rim depth, Sapim CX Ray bladed spokes, alloy nipples, and ceramic bearings. Light enough for rolling hills, stiff enough for field sprints, and aero enough for breaking away on the flats, they're everything you could ever need.
To define the shape of these full carbon clincher rims, Easton utilized wind tunnel data to make them more slippery than any of their older versions. But what would aero be without durable? With that in mind, their composites engineers developed high impact resin systems that, when paired with the unidirectional carbon fiber, result in a unified structure that survives impact testing as well as alloy rims. And where other manufacturers refer to a footnote, Easton concentrates some serious technology -- the brake tracks use Easton's ThermaTec treatment to give you braking performance that's better than anything you've ever experienced before with composite wheels.
The hubs are Easton's R4 SL. They're 36g lighter per set than the R4. The weight shaving tricks include ceramic bearings (grade three hybrid ceramic), a pared down rear axle, and the lightened R4 SL freehub body. The 7050 aluminum alloy axles have tool-free bearing preload adjustment on both wheels, and the pawl carrier has been redesigned to be wider and have a larger diameter to improve its resistance to flex under high-torque loads.
The Easton EC90 Aero Carbon Clincher Wheelset has handbuilt carbon rims. Easton is so sure of them, that they do not have rider weight limits. The 22mm wide rims are laced to Sapim CX Ray bladed stainless steel spokes. The front wheel has 18 radially laced spokes while the rear has 20, radial on the non-drive and cross-two on the drive side. The freehub body is configured for either Campagnolo or Shimano/SRAM. A full set of brake pads is included along with a set of quick releases. Please Note: Easton urges riders to only use composite or plastic tire levers with their carbon clincher wheels.
