When the first platform/clip-in pedals became a big-mountain, aggressive rider favorite, an accumulating pile of plastic cages quickly made it apparent that downhill riding required tougher designs. Since those early days of gravity riding, Crank Brothers has built reputation for developing innovative mountain bike solutions, and the Mallet DH Race Pedal represents the California company's keen design and relentless drive.
You'll find the strength needed for downhill riding in the form of forged scm435 Cro-Moly spindles and wide alloy platforms with replaceable and adjustable traction pins. Crank Brothers' designers and engineers went to great lengths to make this pedal work seamlessly with the current crop of clipless shoes with sticky, flat, and stiff soles.
Where the Mallet 3, 2, and 1 feature a platform designed for traditional, lugged mountain bike shoes and are better suited to enduro and all-mountain biking, the DH is its own animal. There are two extra traction pins on the wider platform, and the stronger spindle is 5mm longer for a wider and more stable stance.
The spindle rides on both cartridge and needle bearings with long-life seals to ensure these essential components stay clean and smooth after seasons of use. The cleat retention system is classic Egg Beater with a heavy duty 300 series spring steel. The included brass cleats allow for either 15 or 20 degrees of float depending on set up.
The Crank Brothers Mallet DH Race Pedal only comes in Red and uses a 6mm Allen key for removal and installation.
