We've spent the last year riding a SRAM Red-equipped bike. As lifelong Campy devotees it was a leap of faith. And a year later, it's a leap we're glad we made. In nearly every way it's lived up to the hype, and while it could stand some nip and tuck work (what gruppo can't?), there's little doubt that Red offers the best ROI of any PRO-level componentry out there. We have only one real beef with Red, in fact. It's the cables. They don't befit the group. Even when they're new they're sluggish & high-friction in comparison to the slick, point-and-click feel of Campy Record or Dura Ace cables. It's not a fatal flaw. But it's Red's most notable drawback, and we told a fellow SRAMophile this lately and he replied with a one word answer, "Yokozuna." It was a tip that'll change the way we think about cables forever.

Who is Yokozuna? It's a Japanese company who allegedly manufacturers Shimano's cables for them. We haven't substantiated the rumor, but given that Yokozuna puts a big Japanese flag on their packaging, and in their marketing materials they have the guts to say "Some say they can tell the difference between our cables and those coming out of Taiwan and China just by the touch," it leads us to believe there's likely some truth to it.

So we followed our pal's advice and bought the Yokozuna Reaction Cable Kit -- their top-of-the-line stuff. And our experience? We are periodically impressed by new bike stuff. But to be amazed, that's a rarity. And amazed is exactly what we are. No cable set we've ever tried -- not Campy, not Dura Ace, not Nokon, not Gore, nothing -- can match what we felt. What ceramic bearings are to your drivetrain, Yokozuna is to cables: An astounding reduction in drag, except unlike ceramics, the Yokozuna difference is one you can feel on a moment-to-moment basis. It's dragless. It turned our SRAM DoubleTap into HyperTap. We barely stroked the lever and the derailleur slammed the chain into gear. Amazing. SRAM could include this cable kit with Red and refer to it as "Red, Second Generation." The difference is that vast.

Yokozuna isn't just about shifting, either. This kit comes with a compressionless brake housing -- something no other company has ever successfully manufactured. Again, the cable response is instant and has zero friction, which is especially nice for subtle braking modulation.

This kit is a complete kit that includes 2 derailleur cables, 2 brake cables, and a full on set of "Jet-Lubed" derailleur housing and "Jet-Lubed" brake housing. And, no, it's not just for SRAM bikes. You can use it for any Shimano bike, and we also offer it in a Campagnolo version as well. Please note that the Campy version is for 10-speed only and is not compatible with 11-speed shifters!

Excellent Shift and Brake Performance

Installed a full set of cables and housing on my bike (Force 22) and my wifes bike (6700). The shifting and braking on both bikes has become top notch, as precise and reliable as electric shifting 6770. The cables are linear pull and as such I did not find the cables difficult to work with on our 49cm and 46cm frames. Best advice I found was to use a dremel to cut the housing. I have now found the key to excellent shifting!

great cables

I read all of these great reviews about this cableset and was curious how cables could really make that big of a difference; i mean, the cables i had before shifted when i wanted to shift and pulled the brake when i wanted to stop. It took quite some time to get this cableset on. my advice is to use a dremel to cut the brake cable, cut it easily with no fray. once i finally got the shifter cables on and i shifted the rear derailleur, i let out an audible 'WOW!!'. The shifting was ten-folds better than my previous cables, it finished the shift before i completely released the tab, which was a huge improvement than before. the shifts are smoother and crisper and you can even hear the crispness.

The brakes were just as surprising, they brake effortlessly, and super powerful. sure, the cables are extremely stiff and hard to bend to your handlebars, but i actually kind of like the 'webbing' it creates coming from the shifter from not being completely against the bars.

Overall I am extremely satisfied with this upgrade, and it IS an upgrade. I've been riding them for a little over a week and am already telling all of my sram buddies to switch. I have a feeling all other cables will be like shifting with rubber bands from here on out.

Negatives out-weigh the positives IMO

If you don't want to read any futher I would suggest the Yokozuna Reaction shift cables but not the brake cables. I had two sets on these cables one set was professionally installed one installed by myself.

(Shift Cables)
Pros:
1. Cables fit well with my SRAM Red and Rival drive trains.
2. Noticeable improvement in shifting over old or cheap cables.
3. The system stayed lubricated and efficient the entire time I used the cables.
4. Very minimal cable stretch. These are not like the shop cables which stretch out some much after the first week you need to re-adjust your derailleurs.

Cons:
1. I didn't like the looks of the smoke. Can I get black please.
2. The cable a bit stiffer and you need to leave a little extra cable in our rear loop.
3. The plastic ferules wore through on the rear derailleur because the cable is a bit stiffer that most.

(Brake Cables)
Pros:
1. The inner cable is super strong, increases brake power a bit and doesn't stretch.

Cons:
1. This things are stiff as hell and are difficult to cut and size properly. They don't bend around anything.
2. If was almost impossible to use these with my SRAM Red Aerolink brakes because they use a self centering floating spring alignment rather than fixing the brake position with a bolt. For this reason the cable length is very important, but these cable are so stiff there is no room for error. And forgot trying to change the brake position for a wider we of wheels. I assume this would affect all brakes with the same design.
3. The cable is so stiff I couldn't get it to work in the rear without binding up the brakes. This could be the angle the cable takes our of my Look frame.
4. The ferules for the brakes didn't fit in my SRAM shifters easily. I have to force then in to the shifter.
5. Even with professional cable cutters the housing crushed and but be rounded back out with a pick.
6. The stiff cable will rub the finish right off the bike

Gotten 3 seasons out of these!

Installed these on my SRAM Red build in summer of 2011 and ~9,000 miles later everything still shifts fantastically! I had assumed I would have had to change them out every season, but I have not noticed a decline in the smoothness of my shifting with this cable system. I live in a dry, arid climate and avoid riding in the rain, which probably helps. I do ride a lot of gravel/dirt roads though. I am going to replace all my cables this spring with the same system and will be able to tell at that time if things shift and brake more smoothly. I opted for the white housing, which looks great. I highly recommend these cables!

VERY good, sometimes tricky to install

The shift cables are amazing, they really do make a difference in the lightness and crispness of the shift. The brake set is also VERY good, much lighter action at the brake lever, and much more power resulting.

The only downside that I've found is that the brake housing is VERY stiff, and also wider than normal housing. You're going to need to cut it with a dremel or something simmilar, as regular housing cutters will crimp the housing and cause it not to work well. Also, because of the stiffness, its vital that you get your housing lengths exactly right otherwise the stiff housing will push the brake caliper to one side, causing uneven braking.

Other than that, solid cable set that will really increase the performance of both shifting and braking.

Sure is :) Depending on your rear brake set-up, if externally routed, the housing bend from the rear of the frame to the rear brake caliper must be pre-bent a few times - makes it perform better. Internally mounted cables tend to have less of a bend when the housing exits the frame. Cheers :)

Way better than average cables

Just fyi; I don't change my cables twice a season. In fact I put them on and leave them til there is a problem. I had the shop install these as they required some special cutting. I heard some people take a cable and put it into the house and use a dremmel tool so there is no "crimp" in the housing. Nevertheless, I like them but you need to put some helicopter clear tape on your bike to protect anywhere these rub. Its like a chainsaw to wood if you don't. They definitely last longer than other cables; much longer. They are not very flexible. I have had on for 2 seasons and its beginning to get some rust look under the clear coat of the housing. Probably just cosmetic. I'll probably go back to normal cables for awhile just to see the difference again. I will say these have the least give of any cable and they do improve your shifting/braking as there is no compression.

If you have SRAM and aren't totally.....

Happy..... Try these cables. I have the new Sram RED yaw 10 speed. The OEM cables just didn't do it OR it just didn't shift as smooth for a top O' the line grouppo. Try the new cables and made a huge difference. Huge. I did a lot of research and in all my findings the result was the same. These cables seem to be made for Sram. This is a awesome and cheap way to change the performance and feel of your bike.

Best cables there is. When installing the rear brake cable (that goes into the actual rear brake) try to pre bend this part, as these are pretty stiff and may grab a little. Once you have the cable length dialed in - you are good to go. They also last a long time :)

Installed on SRAM Red 10-speed group

The shifting was improved over the OEM, gore cables but the brakes were immediately transformed....HUGE improvement in brake level feel and modulation. I can one finger brake often now. I will soon be putting them on my cx bikes.

Is this kit intended for use with road bikes only? Can I use it on my mt bike?

These are the cables I have been looking for my entire life. The brake cables transform your brakes into the most crisp, best modulating braking I have ever had on both my road bike and cyclocross bike. I have been running these all summer and I can't stress enough how much of a diference they make in my braking perfomance. The shifting is also flawless.

Still loving these cable. 6000+ miles on the road bike and 2 race season on the 'cross bike and they are still flawless. One of the best bang for your buck upgrades i have ever done.

A big step up.

My cables and housings had gotten pretty sluggish after two-and-a-half years, so I decided to give these a try when I moved my SRAM Rival drivetrain from my road frame to a 'cross frame. The quality of this stuff is apparent. The cables are very slick, the housings are sturdier, and even the ferrules are better. My new bike with old parts is shifting and braking better than the old one ever did!
