Yeti knew it had a crowd of aggressively devoted fans to please when it began redesigning the new version of its SB6 — not to mention, 2016 will mark the brand's 30th anniversary. The new SB6 Carbon Anniversary Edition X01 Complete Mountain Bike is a hallmark of Yeti's success, staying true to its roots as Yeti's longest travel, biggest gravity bike, without sacrificing the snappy responsiveness that made it so beloved by its fans. Brand new for this year, Yeti added a Boost 148 rear axle and a Fox 36 Factory 160mm fork, along with a custom paint job to celebrate three decades of Yetis on the trails.
To start, the addition of Boost 148 in the rear axle is arguably the most notable change to the 2016 model. Despite the range of opinions that surround the continuously changing rear axle standards, it's hard to argue that Boost 148 isn't a very big step in the right direction. By increasing the axle length from the recently introduced 142mm to a newer 148mm, Yeti adds more space between the rear hubs, which decreases the spoke angle, stiffening your wheels and chassis platform. This makes the entire rear triangle more efficient, and adds responsiveness as you pedal over rocks and through the crux of a climb. Since the hub's bearings are set wider apart, they also experience less wear from torsional forces, which in turn prolongs their lifespan.
As we mentioned, Yeti made no changes to the frame geometry for the new SB6, choosing to keep the relaxed head tube angle and stable wheelbase and chainstay length the same as on last year's model. The fork receives an upgrade in the form of Fox's latest Factory 160mm fork, while Switch Infinity suspension new last year returns again, continuing to provide a plush ride and the promise of long-term durability. The build kit centers on SRAM's light and fast X01 one-by drivetrain, paired with a Race Face SIXC Carbon crankset. We're impressed with the finishing touches too — DT Swiss EX471 rims, paired with Maxxis High Roller tubeless tires and a SRAM Reverb hydraulic dropper seat post for a seamless transition between wild descents and grueling climbs.
