Filling the gaps.

This year, Yeti found itself staring into a gap between the nimble handling of its SB4.5c and the locomotive power of the SB6c. We can’t exactly say whether the energetic, Colorado-based group of engineers found themselves thrashed around one too many times on rough slickrock trails on the more trail-oriented SB4.5 or grew tired of chugging uphill on the SB6, but we do know that the new 2017 SB5.5 Turq Mountain Bike Frame aims to sit somewhere in Yeti's mainstays, leaning slightly more towards the downhill-loving tendencies of the SB6 than the good-natured SB5. If you’ve watched yourself gravitate towards increasingly bigger lines and more technical terrain over the years, but can’t completely abandon your trail riding roots, the SB5.5 makes an ideal vessel for your next series of escapades.

Without being too cryptic, Yeti tells us that its Turq series represents the most advanced frames it can create at any given time. For the SB5.5 Turq, that means a more precise carbon layup, molded to reinforce key stress points along the frame without adding bulk and reduce weight by almost 300g from the regular version. This process results in strength where you need it, and lightness where you don’t.

Aside from that, the SB5.5 Turq arrives with the same capable geometry as its sibling, boasting a 66.5-degree head tube angle that can’t wait to blast its way aggressively through steep, steppy rock gardens that leave little room for indecision. Before you start to think of this as another all-mountain bike that just wants to go straight, know that the long-and-low front end is governed by a short, snappy rear triangle that refuses to let it get too relaxed. Boost rear spacing allows for stubby, quick-thinking chainstays that take successive bumps in stride while tracking a tough line. They’ll move and adapt to burly terrain, always returning underneath you to take on the next stretch of blistering desert singletrack or rooty, rarely-maintained trail.

Yeti’s Switch Infinity suspension is the lynchpin of the SB5.5’s seemingly limitless capability. Its linear travel hits the sweet spot of anti-squat to keep pedaling sharp across rocky climbs, and it also erases the momentary harshness that its predecessor, the Switch Link design, would display when pushed to the absolute limit. Riding with the shock open won’t condemn you to bottomless squish when you have to transition quickly into a short climb on the other side of a long descent; the bike will still claw up anything without leaving you wide-eyed and white-knuckled when you fly down a deep rollover on the other side.

Other than those two changes, veteran Tribe members will be relieved to learn that the suspension systems are fairly similar. Like the Switch Link, the Switch Infinity slider travels upward under the first phase of compression, when the SB5.5 is settling into its sag point. As the rear end compresses deeper, the direction changes, and the DH-inspired slider travels down toward the bottom bracket shell to maintain a steady pedaling platform.

This change of direction is smoother, without the dead space occasionally present in the previous generation of Switch suspension, but the effect is the same. Deep in the stroke, it works in conjunction with the upper pivot to produce a vertical wheel path that flattens big hits. You'll be tempting faster, straighter lines across the chunky stuff, because the SB5.5 is just about the perfect trail buddy, effectively tidying up sloppy, questionable lines and sweeping rider errors under the rug.

Finally, we can’t omit an obligatory paragraph on compatibility and standards. The Boost rear axle wants to be mated to an appropriately Boosted front axle. Don't let it down. The frame allows clearance for mid-sized tires, but going any bigger than 2.3in out back might start testing the extra real estate allowed by the Boost spacing. The frame takes a 44/56mm head set and a PF92 bottom bracket, dimensions meant to stress stability and stiffness all around.
