Many companies successfully operate in a niche market, with Yeti Cycles being a perfect example of this. On the other hand, while being the underdog is fun for a time, it's far more common for companies to diversify. And for that reason it comes as no surprise that the dirt-junkies in Golden, Colorado are expanding its expertise into the world of mountain bike apparel. And with innovative products like the gravity-oriented Padroni Shorts, it's inherently simple to see why.

Note that when we use the term 'diversify,' we use it loosely, because you won't find any Euro flair coming from a company that's been dedicated to off-road cycling since its inception. Instead, you're only going to find pieces that're destined to get muddy. In order to produce products that reflect its values and quality, Yeti enlisted the help of a lead designer with extensive experience at Patagonia. And if you're looking for tells of this recruited expertise, they're more than apparent in both the fabric selection and construction techniques of the Padroni. Accordingly, the aforementioned provides the Padroni with the durability of moto-bottoms, only without the weight or stiffness.

For the shorts themselves, Yeti constructed them from a durable nylon fabric. This material provides both the breathability and flexibility needed for downhill runs, without compromising its resistance to abrasion. And for particularly nasty days, Yeti also treated the fabric with a DWR finish. So, you don't have to worry about getting soaked through from wheel-spray.

The Padroni shorts have a longer length then either the Teller or Freeland shorts, and they also use a power mesh liner that's soft against the skin for irritation-free pedaling. This liner also lends itself to wicking perspiration away from the skin. So, you're able to stay dry and comfortable after hours on the trail. In terms of fit, the shorts feature a long, 15-inch inseam. However, given the Padroni's baggy cut, Yeti took the precaution to articulate the knees in order to permit an excellent freedom of movement, with or without pads. For a touch of added ventilation, the shorts also feature zipped thigh vents that allow plenty of airflow through the shorts for hotter rides.

Securing the fit, a Velcro fly has been teamed up with a waistband that features a large stretch yoke, a tech webbing waist adjustment, and silicone grip tape. Collectively, the system provides a perfect fit that'll stay dialed, run after run. And for storage of your ride essentials, Yeti also included two zippered stash pockets and two hand pockets.

The Yeti Cycles Padroni Shorts are available in the colors Black and Grey and in five sizes from Small to XX-Large. Please note that Yeti bases its sizing from the waist. So, a Small is a size 30, Medium is a 32, Large is a 34, X-Large is a 36, and XX-Large is a 38.

Here's what others have to say...

Says fits Large but don't believe it

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs small

I had to go a size up. Build looks sturdy, a few rides in I think they'll work out nicely.

Two things:

Very long, past the knees. Doesn't bother me but might bother some.

Also, the pockets are kind of useless. When standing/walking whatever is in them sits right at the bend of the knee and swings around when in motion. Less bothersome when riding, but still a distraction.

Good Shorts, but a wee bit tight

  • Gender:Male
  • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it

The shorts are great quality and the waist size is accurate, but they are not baggy AT ALL. I wear a 34 waist jeans and ordered the large shorts, they did fit in the waist but no room at all in the crotch or butt area and the legs are stove pipes straight down from the waist. I have big legs, big butt and a big d!@k and these shorts don't allow for any room below the waist. Not sure if I could even ride a bike in them. Maybe these are designed for pros who are usually pencil thin, but I am a regular guy who is 6' and weighs 200 lbs. Returning for an XL and keeping my fingers crossed.

how did the xl work for you? i just ordered the xl and i have a 34 waist 5'10 195

All my pants are 36's, I ordered the 36"/XL size and these were definitely small. They actually fit fine in the waist, but tight everywhere else. Must be my giant legs of steel.

Now that I've worn the XL's a few times I like them. They are a tad loose in the waist (I'm a 34"), but the fit in the crotch and legs is much better than the L. They have pull tab/drawstrings on each side that pull the waist in pretty good. The top above the zipper is all velcro, but it's pretty big and holds them closed good. This is my first pair of Padroni's and I'm just getting used to them hitting my knees (I assume that's what a Padroni is?).

what size it will be good for the waist 32?

Medium... unless you're going to be wearing pads underneath them then large. From what I gather, these run big.

Velcro closure on the front

  • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it
  • Fit:Runs large

Velcro closure at the front, ie, not button. Not a good design.

Excellent shorts

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

The quality on these shorts is great. The fabric is very tough and the fit is great. I use 32 jeans/dress pants and the large 34 fits just right. Maybe not your go-to shorts when its hot, but overall great shorts

for reference, I have Dakine syncline, pace and Royal Matrix shorts and all of them are in large/34 and fit just right.

I got these for 60 bucks and I can't complain.

Love em

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:Runs large

These are great shorts. The material is sturdy (hasn't ripped yet on a few bails on hardpack) and the fit is great for me, right at the knee cap. I'm 6'3" 205. The 36" is loose, but fit perfect if you put some padded liner or pads under them... which is what I would say the sizing a little large is for personally. The vents work good, but when it's 100 out... nothing cools me down really besides the river. I think vents in the crotch area would be better. I only have these and a pair of Esquire Royal Racing shorts. I like these better than the Esquires personally.

Yeti Pants passing grade

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:Runs large

The Yeti pants are a bit loose on me, size 36, cannot quite snug the buckle down enough to hold them up. The material is loose fit for the sprint good, no real ventilation system. NO Chamois liner is a significant downside. the storage pockets are about the same was with all the other pants sold online which still remain inadequate for storage of c-phone and keys.

Well made

  • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it
  • Fit:True to size

The quality of these shorts is very high and I was impressed. The fit is very nice for a DH short. They look great and were pretty comfortable. The stretch panels weren't very stretchy. The straps on the shorts were nice and appreciated the high waist in the back. Just were a bit to hot for me to ride in and the vents did not vent well for me. Length were just below knee for me at 5'11".

sweet mtn bike shorts

Im a 34 waist and the large fit but 34 was the max for them. I decided to size up and then use the tightening straps on the side to crank em down to a 34 and think they fit more comfortably that way. The two stash pockets are big and have high quality zippers. the vents are really nice as well, provides a lot of breathability. The color looks almost like a super dark grey in the photo but they are truly black. Definitely would recommend getting these

    Crowd-surfing security

I got these for mtn biking in my home state of PA. I decided to really test how secure the zippered pockets were by wearing them to a rock/metal concert where 50,000 people stood in the pits. I wore them for 2 days of moshing and crowd-surfing and never even had the zippers slip a millimeter. My phone, cash and ID stayed safe despite all the flips, jarring and shoving that is common at an event like this. If you are worried about keeping your valuables safe without wearing a backpack GET THESE SHORTS!
