Free to ride.

If you need coverage and technical features that'll see you through dawn to dark rides, the Yeti Cycles Freeland Shorts are your best friend on the trail. Stash pockets are generous and easy to access while riding, preventing any needless dismounts that'll stall you from covering ground. However, that's from from the extent of Yeti's attention to both detail and quality.

The Freeland shorts are constructed from a tough, yet malleable stretch polyester that facilitates excellent maneuverability around the bike. So, negotiating technical sections of trail is now a far more simplified affair. This characteristic is further enhanced by a rear stretch panel and a wide waistband with both tech webbing and silicone grippers. This system comfortably holds the Freeland in position without inciting the risk of either bunching or pinching.

And when the sun heats things up, you needn't worry, as Yeti took ample measures to keep you cool. The shorts feature zip venting at the thighs and stitched rivet vents to accomplish this goal. Adding to this, the shorts' fabric was selected for its lightweight and breathable characteristics. In terms of pedaling comfort, Yeti enhanced the material by incorporating glide patches that reduce, if not eliminate, irritation. In addition to this, Yeti has also treated the shorts' material with a DWR finish. So, with its added water-repellency, you'll remain protected when the weather changes up on the mountain.

The Freeland is also compatible with Yeti's Liner, which features an Italian-made chamois, for those that need the highest level of long-ride comfort.

The Yeti Cycles Freeland Shorts are available in the color Black and in five sizes from Small to XX-Large. Please note that Yeti bases its size from the waist. So, a Small is a waist size 30, Medium is a 32, Large is a 34, X-Large is a 36, and XX-Large is a 38.

  • Adjustable waist
  • Compatible with Yeti’s Liner, sold separately
  • Multiple stash pockets
  • Zippered vents
  • DWR treatment

Great biking shorts

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:True to size

I have used these shorts several times this year and I love them. They go really well with the Yeti Como Liner and combined are probably some of the best set ups for biking. I really like the zipper mesh vent feature on the front of the shorts to help you cool off faster. They have a DWR treatment on them for those days where you get caught in the rain and don't want to get totally soaked. The stash pocket is great for holding those smaller items like car keys or headphones. If you are looking for a new pair of biking shorts I would for sure give these a look.

Function and Style

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:True to size

These are exceptional shorts: lightweight, super comfy, and ample storage without being excessively baggy. I even took a small spill and the shorts held up nicely. These are now part of my regular kit.

great shorts

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:True to size

I use these shorts all the time! they fit great I bought the 32" waist and they fit me fine, I do not use a liner in them because I don't like the feel of them. The vents would be better for me if they had some mesh liner behind them but definitely not a deal breaker.

Functional Shorts

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs small

These shorts work well. They fit a little snug. Not terrible, but I did go to an L instead of my regular M. Material is durable and I love the thigh vents. Pockets are functional enough. I put these on and then don't think about them again until I'm done riding.

Great shorts

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit:True to size

i wear a large and they fit as expected. wish they had two back pockets and not one.

Excellent quality!

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit:Runs small

I wear 34" shorts and 36" Levis because I prefer a little extra room and like to breathe in Levis. The XL shorts fit me perfect and I'm buying a second pair. The quality and craftsmanship in these shorts can't be beat and I like the color selection.

Good looking shorts

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:True to size

They do not run small as far as the waist and the shorts is concern. I think what people are referring to when they said it run small is the crotch is a bit shallow especially when wearing a liner underneath. I took it to my drycleaner and my number 1 seamstress in the world analyzed the crap out of it and crotch would be better served with an extra inch. Hence the 4 stars rating

Makes for a comfortable ride

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:True to size

They don't ride up and down your legs or get bunched up in your crotch which is nice. Things get a bit snug depending your padded shorts but overall I'd recommend them.

Run a little small

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit:Runs small

I love a lot of things about these shorts...but...they run a little small...specifically in the crotch, they are hard to wear with padded undershorts. I got the XL and they fit like a 34 not like a 36. Guess I'll have to lose a little weight. They also lack a back pocket for my wallet. I love the vents, and the size of the front pockets.

Super material and great fit

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times

As others have stated the material is pretty bombproof and for me the fit was spot on. Definitely a baggy cut but not enough to be catching on your saddle when moving around. Quality and style you expect from a Yeti.

really well made

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times

I really like these shorts, they're super well made, have all the features/pockets in the right places and dont ride up or down when you're in the saddle. If these fit your waist, the length and bagginess is pretty sport on. I had to go up a size just for the waist so they're slightly bigger overall than I'd prefer.

bomber (a ladies' perspective..)

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times

So I've taken to buying guys' mountain bike shorts lately, because I'm tall and hate having a gap between my shorts and my kneepads. I also own the Yeti Norrie shorts, which are pretty similar to these in terms of material/construction (although extraordinary circumstances led to their destruction after about half a season of use, thus treating myself to these!) The stretch polyester/DWR fabric combo is definitely my favorite for MTB shorts because it's so bombproof. I have fallen multiple times in these and countless times in the Norries (same material) without much to show for it. Fit-wise, these are definitely pretty "baggy" (but hey, it's not like I expected them to be fitted), and they could be a TAD longer, but they're definitely longer than Yeti's women's shorts. The zippered vents on the front of the thighs are a little weird, I always mistake them for pockets.. and they go straight through to your leg, no mesh or anything. Overall though, these are great shorts and I'd recommend 'em for ladies and guys alike if you want something super durable.

Yeti through and through

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:True to size

These are great all-around shorts made from excellent fabric. Slight stretch, and the liner is silky. The front zippers are not pockets, though, they're vents. My clif bar didn't last long in there. The waist adjustment buckles are small compared to competitors, but seem to work well. Other reviewers noted they run small, so I ordered a large. I don't think they run small myself, but the large works fine with my 33 in waist with a lycra liner short. Color choices are great, not the typical euro day-glo...

Perform Great, Fit Great and look Great

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit:True to size

These shorts arrived in 2 quick days and I ripped open the package in anticipation to try then on for fit and prepare my kit for the next day morning ride. The color and Material are outstanding as I chose Turquoise. Fit was perfect in the waist as I wear a 32 and the M I ordered was listed as 32. These shorts sport an athletic fit which I appreciate.

I wore another brand shammy for the first ride and the temps outside were hovering around 104 degrees. The shorts never caught up on the saddle and allowed free movement at all times. Breathability was top notch and I chose to unzip the 2 front leg openings for a little extra cool air. I can safely say these are the best Mountain biking shorts I own and I'll be back to purchase more models from Yeti in the future !

Very comfortable

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs small

I was concerned about these shorts being too snug based on the other reviews, so I ordered them a bit larger (34 waist when I'm normally a 32 or 33) and they're perfect. So definitely error on the larger size but you don't need to go too far beyond that. Nicely placed pockets that aren't too big but still large enough to hold an iPhone 6, for example, without bugging my leg during rides.

Sweet shorts!

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:Runs small

I usually wear a 34 in jeans and definitely prefer the fit of the XL/36. They have YKK zips, good snaps, clean lines, no velcro BS, no silly lower back pocket, and don't come with a shoddy liner that you're going to replace anyway. I really like the glide patches and the waist adjustments. I could do without the thigh vents since they don't do much but add weight and cost. A couple more color choices would be appreciated, too.

Some shorts in the pics include belt loops while others don't. Do these shorts come with belt loops or not?

Brown ones I got have no belt loops on them as shown in photos.

Great Features but Slim Fit

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs small

The material these are made out of feels great: fairly rugged but decently breathable with a little stretch. The features are well thought out with easily accessible zippered cargo pocket and zippered vents that let plenty of air through. The also have mesh pockets that help to vent, but the mesh is burlier than in my fox shorts. The stretch panel on the back is nice and the external waist adjustment is handy for getting the initial fit. I don't find myself constantly wanting to adjust my other shorts, so i don't know that the external vs. internal adjustment really matter though.

The fit can be pretty annoying though. Wearing them while generally heading down feels great. Wearing them on a trail with lots of pedaling causes them to shift uncomfortably. If you have muscular legs (not be be confused with a lack of body fat that shows off muscle) the legs with ride up and cause the waist to move. and fitting bulky DH pads underneath is tougher than with other shorts.

These probably fit great if you're on the skinnier side. if you have bigger legs, ordering the right size waist will make the rest of the shorts tighter than you'd like. Ultimately, i like the fit son my fox shorts more.

Awesome, durable shorts!

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:Runs small

Backcountry reviews are really my bible when it comes to making any kind of biking/hiking/camping purchase. The honest reviews from people just like me separates this site from others! So with that, I thought it was about time to provide a review of my own!

I bought these shorts looking for a durable all-mountain kind of short that wouldn't rip the first time I went down on the trails, which has happened before with a pair of shorts that I own. After reading reviews on the Yeti Freeland shorts, I decided to go with these over the Teller shorts mainly for their durability.

First day out, took a small but noticeable tumble and thought, "Oh great! There goes my new shorts!" To my surprise, not a mark or tear was found on them. The material of these shorts is so durable and really appears to be rip-proof! It does have more of a soft-shell feel compared to the dri-fit feel of other shorts I own. I love the functionality of the zippers for the extra ventilation on long rides as well!

I would size up though. I normally wear a size 32 (medium) in mountain biking shorts, but decided to go with the large in these after reading some reviews. The cinch straps on the side make the shorts fit perfectly.

Here's a picture of my dog and I on the trails from the other day!

Awesome, durable shorts!

This is EXACTLY the review I was looking for. I have both of those shorts that you mentioned in my cart and had to make a decision. Thanks for the great review! Btw, your dog looks awesome.

Great versatile short

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:True to size

I find myself reaching for these shorts more than any others in my closet. They're so comfortable, starting with the soft-shell like fabric that can take a beating, shed off a bit of water, but are still breathable enough for summer rides in Colorado.

The vents on these things are well designed - zippers on the front of the leg open up a cavity that scoops in air and actually work. The silk type material on the leg fronts make for a comfy ride with no leg chafing, though the material can start pilling on knee pad velcro. The silicone waistband stays put and the nice pull tabs keep the shorts in place where you put them. With all these thoughful (and useful) features, and a versatile fit that is great for XC to AM rides, it doesn't get much better.

Props to Yeti for putting out some great functional clothing!
