Yeti’s first foray into the world of oversized mountain bike wheels, the Big Top 29er, seamlessly mends the distinctive Colorado-bred handling traits Yeti fans cherish with the benefits of enhanced flotation, traction, and momentum. The end result is a highly versatile, go-all-day machine that butters rough trails while keeping you strong and fresh for the last sprint to the trailhead.
The Big Top’s front triangle makes use of 7005 butted and manipulated aluminum tubing to ensure ultra-precise handling and excellent power transmission when climbing out of the saddle. Aluminum’s inherent stiffness, while great for efficiency, can be brutally harsh as it transfers every trail imperfection directly to the rider. The larger air volume of twenty-nine inch tires help to quell this fatigue-inducing vibration, but it’s still there, slowly eating away at the rider.
Yeti’s engineers went the extra mile and added a high-modulus carbon fiber rear triangle to dampen these vibrations. What you get is a super smooth, lively ride with reduced weight—effectively turning the Big Top into a highly capable marathon machine. The carbon rear triangle features Yeti’s iconic looped seat and chainstays which pay homage to the infamous Yeti FRO hardtails of yesteryear. The frame weighs in at a feathery 4lbs (1.8kg) and features Yeti’s Chip system dropouts. This dropout system allows the use of standard quick releases, or converted for the new 142 x 12mm thru axle wheels offered by DT Swiss and Shimano.
The Big Top’s geometry is optimized for a 100mm suspension fork or a 500.8mm axle to crown rigid fork. But, you’re not limited to that. You can run an 80mm or 120mm travel fork; it will, however, change the handling and geometry. A shorter fork will make the headtube steeper for quick handling (think sports car) while a longer fork will make the headtube slacker and slower handling (think monster truck). For increased steering precision without adding excess weight, the Big Top uses a tapered head tube with a traditional external cup 1-1/8in top and 1-1/2in bottom cup.

The Yeti Big Top is available in three sizes from medium to X-Large and comes in one color for 2012—Black. I t requires a direct mount derailleur and a 30.9mm seatpost and a standard 73mm BB shell. Yeti offers a five year warranty on the Big Top frame.
