Speed up, speed down, speed all the way around.

Yeti's ASR Carbon XTR Complete Mountain Bike isn't as simple as its spec sheet would suggest. Four inches of stiff, single-pivot travel, a claimed frame weight of just 1,900g, and a 32 Float CTD fork is typically a recipe for pure XC speed. But. When the trail turns down and the root furniture and rock gardens rise up to meet it, the frame's enduro-inspired geometry reveals the other half of its aggressive nature. Big climbs, big lines, and blocky terrain all appeal to the ASR Carbon.

The frame's key dimensions skew toward the agro trail side of the spectrum, with a top tube, bottom bracket height, and head tube angle that are longer, lower, and slacker than what you'd expect to find on a traditional XC or endurance race rig. The frame is eager on descents, turning even technical terrain into a playground by sticking to lines and keeping you grounded, regardless if you're on the 27.5in wheels of sizes x-small and small or the 29ers of sizes medium to x-large.

Of course, its high modulus carbon fiber construction means the frame is also extremely light and stiff. In a rare combination for such an XC-minded bike, this confluence of low weight and enduro geometry mean you can push it on the climbs and the descents. The single-pivot design contributes yet more weight savings, and the rate-modifying link guides Yeti's signature rear swing-arm through travel to somewhat address the lack of a fancier, heavier suspension.

A collaborative effort between Yeti and FOX Racing Shox produced a Float CTD rear shock dialed to the proper tune for the do-it-all ASR. Efficiency on the climbs and confidence on the descents is yours, as the linkage/shock combo make for a highly controlled but also reactive platform that feels bigger than it is — though the frame's climbing pedigree may see you spending as much time as possible in Trail in order to maximize speed where heavier frames would falter.

Yeti spec'd this particular model of the frame to be pretty damn near the fastest platform in off-road riding. Turns out that, when you're in super bike territory, this is surprisingly easy: Shimano XTR for everything. In addition to a full XTR group, the kit's rock star build is typified by two additions and a subtraction. The additions are the obvious bling of ENVE's DT Swiss-equiped M50 wheels and the more subtle inclusion of a Chris King headset, because sometimes it's the details that really count. The subtraction manifests as a gap where the front derailleur would be if this were a double. But it's not. It's a one-by built for saving weight and going real, real fast, regardless of the supposed limitations of XC racing bikes.
