Head for the hills.

If your vehicle has a short roof, Yakima made the Sky Box Pro 16 Cargo Box to get you out of town with more gear. Easy-mounting hardware makes it easy to attach to your compatible roof rack system without tools, and the inside padding and organization features keep your gear in place while on the highway. Yakima introduced a new aerodynamic design with a stiffer lid to reduce drag and noise along the way.

  • Tool-less mounting hardware
  • Super Latch Security
  • Internal cargo net and base pad

The Difference.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The Yakima Skybox Pro series differs from the Skybox Carbonite series in the finish applied to the lid. The Pro series comes in a high gloss, automotive style finishes of onyx or titanium. The Carbonite series lids are in semi-gloss black with a dimpled finish (similar to a golf ball's surface).

I got this sweet box to decrease gear clutter and add some overall class to my ride. An 18 would have been pushing the limits but the 16 fits perfectly atop my valiant steed, Blue (92' Nissan Pathfinder). The locks/latches are easy to open and I love that I can open this bad boy from either side. I was astounded at how simple it was to securely attach the box to my vehicle - no bells and whistles - just a simple interior operated clasp latch.

The extras that come with the pro are kind of cool. The gear pad is nothing terribly special, but a nice addition nonetheless. It runs the entire length of the box, but not the complete width. The gear net is very practical, and the inside of the box has links to connect said net.

I can fit 3+ humans worth of camping soft goods, copious amounts of climbing gear, all of my car repair/emergency basics, and assorted random junk. So far, it doesn't seem to change my gas mileage more so than a car full of friends, but time will tell.

I will post another photo when I've pimped the exterior out with stickers galore.

This thing can do it all!

Weather if you're a sales rep, a weekend warrior, or just a road tripper. This is the cargo box for you. Easy on easy off within just a matter moments, not too heavy and works awesome if you have a wagon like a Subaru the back is angled so you can open the tailgate fully unlike some Thule boxes that hang off the back. Used this on both my Tacoma with pic enclosed and my 97' Subaru. That pic is with a 6 foot bed Tacoma

The "Yak" 16S Is Everything I Expected +

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

From the moment I placed my order to delivery, everything ran seamlessly and like clock work, thanks to the good people at Backcountry.com. After delivery I mounted my new Yakima 16S on the Yakima Whispbar that I originally purchased for my mountain bike.Installation couldn't have been easier. All it took was five minutes and sliding the Whispbars to the desired length.

I'm an independent contractor working in the oil& gas pipeline business living in Florida. I travel to assignments for extended periods of three to six + months, so I need to take along my clothes (for whatever climate), a portable office, some essential kitchen gizmos, and a few creature comforts and maybe a bicycle, fly rod or upland hunting equipment. After delivery and uncrating, I mounted the carrier on top of my 2006 ML-350 in five minutes. The only adjustment was to slide the Whispbar and using the built in fastening system developed by Yakima , clamped it down to its desired length.

Having never used a rooftop carrier before, I drove around for a week to see how I liked it.

It was completely quiet, secure and with no clue whatsoever that anything was on top of the car. Only when you got out of the car you were visually reminded that there was a Yak Box on top.

I'm looking for ward to my next assignment and the use of my 16S. This time I won't need to leave something behind for lack of space. I give this five stars.

I have a 2011 subaru outback and have 20 inches from the cross bar and the door lid when open, mounted will I be able to open the rear door without hitting the skybox. Thanks

What kind of bars do you have? My 2000 Subaru Outback has a Sky Box 16 on it, and with my Yakima bars mounted all the way forward, my hatchback opens all the way and gently rests on the box.

Does the Pro version of this cargo box really improve the sound and aerodynamics of it THAT much? Just trying to decide if is worth spending the extra money or not.

Why so I have to ask? I would think this is something everyone would want to know?

I'd be really interested in the INTERNAL dimensions of the box. As in how long of skis can I fit in there?

According to the Yakima site it's "Perfect for hauling gear for up to 3 campers. Great for snowboards and skis up to 180cm."

Yep! It's in there.

Even in our fairly large 08 Toyota Sienna, we welcome the additional space, just a slight increase in wind noise and no real drop in fuel mileage the Pro 16 fits perfectly between the sunroofs rear edge and the rear of the van, opening the rear hatch was no problem. Jamming the various vacation collectibles and a bunch of the kids luggage was again no problem (soft sided luggage helps). Honestly, the fact that it open on both side is awesome and we went into some heavy rain storms and everything was dry afterwards. We upgraded from our old Sears X-Cargo (Dads hand me down nightmere) Choose wisely and Happy Trails to you and yours!

    Yep! It's in there.

I have this great box on Subie aero bars that I installed. How or can a faring work with this set up? I see Yakima fairing is for round bars... Rose

Check with your dealer for a fairing. Honestly, the wind noise and degeneration in gas mileage caused by your cargo box is so severe that a fairing will likely do nothing for you (except look faster).

Simply love it! We keep all our family stuff and car items in the box, keeping the car clean.

The Pro model is super stylish on our Chevy Hybrid.
