The Xentis XBL 4.2 Carbon Clincher Wheelset may be lower in the Austrian company's model hierarchy than the top-shelf Squad 4.2 Carbon Clinchers, but that's like saying a Porsche 911 4S is lower in the sports car company's hierarchy than the 911 Turbo — yes, one is technically the higher performer, but we're talking insane levels of performance to begin with, so differences are relative.
Rim depth and width are identical between the two, but there are two primary differences that separate the models. The first is carbon density. The Squads using a stronger, more dense carbon, and so are able to use less of it, for a lighter wheel. Still, the same revolutionary construction is on display in the XBLs as on the Squads, and they're incredibly strong for their weight. Why? Look closely and you'll notice the radial orientation (straight out from the middle) of the carbon weave. In other words, the carbon's structure has been oriented in a circle. This is far more complicated and time-consuming to produce than the relatively simple molding and gluing of carbon sheets into a wheel shape. The result is a more expensive, but also stronger and lighter, wheelset, with more control in the hands of the engineers over the wheels' ride quality in the layup process.
The second big difference is also one you can identify visually. The wavy base of the Squad's fairing is absence in the XBL, making the XBL's technically less aerodynamic, although these tangible differences in straight-line performance will be negligible to mere mortals like most of us. Rest assured that the XBLs also benefit from the extremely high quality control maintained by Xentis' Austrian manufacturing facilities. From the bearing seals in proprietary hubs to the depth consistency of even its deepest rims, nothing leaves the factory if final measurements exceed even a tenth of a millimeter of tolerance, so you can be sure you're rolling on true Alps-engineered masterpieces.
