Precision and engineering from the Alps.

Hailing from surgically-clean Austrian manufacturing facilities and showcasing some seriously cutting-edge wheel tech, Xentis storms onto the scene with fantastic do-it-all wheels like the Xentis Squad 4.2 Carbon Clinchers.

The Squad line of wheels is Xentis's lighter, faster, more expensive line of wheels, and the company argues rightfully that its 4.2s are some of the best all-around hoops on the road. For one, they're outrageously strong for their low weight, and one of the reasons why is visible. Look closely and you'll notice the radial orientation (straight out from the middle) of the carbon weave. The carbon's fibers and structures have been oriented in a circle. This is far more complicated and time-consuming to produce than the molding and gluing of carbon sheets into a wheel shape. The result is a more expensive, but also stronger and lighter, wheelset (just look at those weight numbers), with more control in the hands of the engineers over the wheels' ride quality in the layup process.

You'll also notice that wave edge of the rim just below the high-tolerance carbon brake track. This wave aids in aerodynamics by smoothly "chopping" the wind as it breaks over the rim, rather than bursting and creating turbulence as it crosses the rim's surface, reducing drag and creating a faster wheel. Finally, Xentis' extraordinarily high quality standards ensure an extremely precise and reliable product. From the bearing seals in proprietary hubs to the depth consistency of even its deepest rims, nothing leaves the factory if final measurements exceed even a tenth of a millimeter of tolerance, so you can be sure you're rolling on true Austrian-engineered masterpieces.

are carbon brake pads needed for these wheels?

No, Xentis has a patented brake surface on the rim (they've machined down the resin so the braking surface is harder and more heat resistant). They actually say that you don't need carbon-specific pads and can even use alloy pads. http://www.xentis.com/en/2011/patented-brake-surface/718/teaser-en/

Light and fast

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Purchased these because I wanted a light, durable race wheel for climbing that was different from what everyone else has considering the plethora of wheel options on the market. The braking surface is not gimmickry-they brake better than any carbon wheel I've used. The integrated spoke magnet is a nice option too. These wheels take no time to get up to speed and feel confident at high speeds. Great all-rounder, do it all wheelset.
