With a huge list of podiums, from multiple Downieville Classic victories to being the single most popular tire to appear in the Tour Divide, the WTB Nano's reputation is anything but nano. With the growing popularity of gravel-ready road, or "dual-purpose," bikes hitting the market, WTB decided to tailor the Nano to this segment, trimming a bit of weight and width for compatibility with narrower frames, and coming up with the Nano 40c.
What makes the Nano the legend it is comes down to the innovative tread pattern. One glance and you can see that it's unlike anything else. The center rib is slightly elevated, to maintain virtually constant contact with the ground, so keeping speed over hardpack or even pavement is easy. Move toward the shoulders, however, and you'll see the pronounced, staggered rectangular knobs that bite hard into looser terrain to enable controllable cornering and responsive braking. The high-volume casing, combined with a relatively square profile, equates to a smooth yet efficient ride. WTB's single durometer DNA rubber compound in the Nano 40c balances excellent all-conditions traction with long wear life.
The WTB Nano 40c tire is offered in Race and Comp versions and is available in the size 700c x 40mm. The Race features a folding Aramid bead, 60 TPI casing, and weighs roughly 470 grams; the Comp was given a 27 TPI casing with a non-foldable wire bead and weighs in at 550 grams.
