Wipperman is legendary for their stainless steel chains. You can install and remove them for cleaning in a matter of seconds with no tools thanks to its reusable Connex 10-speed link. And the more you clean your chain, of course, the longer it and the rest of your drivetrain will last. It's not just about the link, though, the stainless steel construction of the S1 gives it an 18% longer lifespan than what you get on a standard steel chain -- another factor that will give your all-too-valuable cassette and chainrings longer life. One final bonus is that stainless is light, and the weight savings is enhanced thanks to Wippermann's use of hollow pins.

Wippermann offers the 10S1 with a 5.9mm pin length and 2.2mm roller width, making it perfectly compatible with all 10-speed drivetrains -- Campagnolo, Shimano, and SRAM.

Best chain for mechanical drivetrains

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Long-lasting, effective, easy to remove and clean, what more could you want? It's much better than any other chain for 10-speed mechanical drivetrains.

Unfortunately, it is simply not as good as the Dura Ace chain for Di2 drivetrains. The asymmetric Shimano chain shifts better on Di2.

Not the best shifting chain

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

While the Connex 10S1 chain is aesthetically pleasing, light weight and apparently of good design, it simply does not shift as well as a Dura Ace CN-7901 chain especially when the drive train configuration is at or near the derailleur gearing limits. For example, with a rear cog that is 28 teeth or larger the Connex chain will not shift as reliably. There is testing that tends to corroborate this (seach for Shifting_Performance_Test_New_Chains.pdf).

Even if the Connex 10S1 chain shifted as well as the less expensive Shimano Dura Ace CN-7901, it is questionable whether the claimed extra life warrants the extra expense (almost double that of the CN-7901).

I will say that the Connex master link works very well (take care to install it in the proper orientation).

Pricey but works.........

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I use to run Wipperman chains solely. As you can see the SS version is pricey but was one of my favorites. Durable and light makes it very nice for most applications other than one on a budget of course. Seems like they use to be cheaper than they are now by a bit. I guess inflation hits everything. If your feeling froggy and need to jump to a real nice chain this is the ticket.
