Why We Like The Wahoo TICKR Heart Rate Monitor

The Wahoo Tickr Heart rate monitor is one of our favorite bike add-ons. Easy to pair with any Bluetooth or ANT+ head unit, this device effortlessly measures heart rate. When we’re discussing training amongst friends, we’ll always hear about how ‘perceived effort’ is the catalyst of all fitness measurements. Throw out power, speed, and cadence, the only thing we need to measure how hard we’re pushing our bodies is a trusted heart rate monitor.

Works well and comfortable fit

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Works well, pairs easily with Zwift or my Garmin bike computer. The strap is comfortable and simple to put on and take off. Garmin HRM is a bit more comfortable, but harder to put on and take off - also had a Garmin strap fail after a couple of years, but my old Wahoo strap still working. Only downside, in my opinion, is that the strap adjustment mechanism loosens a bit over a time or two of wearing.

Accurate, and comfy

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Paired easily. Works well with my Wahoo head unit, and Garmin watch. Fits comfortably, and easily goes unnoticed on my rides. An awesome tool to help with training, or budgeting energy on longer rides.

Works with my Garmin

Wahoo products are always super intuitive to use. Grab the strap, put it on, connect to your phone with the app, proceed to connect to other devices. I use a Garmin as a headunit and this plays great with it. Also communicates easily with Zwift (which I use with my Wahoo Kickr Core).

battery draining after couple days

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I had a Wahoo and a Garmin HRM before. I've chosen Wahoo this time because of the way it locks around the body. After 2 months of using it, it started to drain the battery every week... I've changed the battery already 5 times and it keeps draining out after a couple of uses.

Not good longevity

It works fine for a few months and then it just decides not to work anymore. It took about 6 months for mine to break with normal use. And then I got a warranty one and it broke within a month. Get a different one for sure.

Inaccurate HR readings after 3 months

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

My unit lasted ~3 months before its started to give me inaccurate HR readings (e.g. 140bpm when it should be 170+). Apparently the strap is the problem, which is disappointing because I've always followed instructions to rinse the sweat off after each ride. Wahoo service is good and they are sending a replacement strap. Time will tell if the 2nd one lasts more than 3 months...

Spotty performance

This is my second Wahoo Tickr; the first one performed very well and for a long time. This one, a new generation Tickr, performs only marginally for me. It often doesn't pick up my heart rate until partially through my workout and sometimes it won't pick up at all. Though it connects with Bluetooth just fine when I use it with my indoor trainer, it's sort of pointless to have it connected to Zwift when it won't read my heart rate. Disappointed.

Does everything I want

My Garmin Vivoactive 3 watch's heartrate monitor seems occasionally erratic and unreliable, so I got the TICKR to either replace or verify my heartrate tracking. Very happy so far (several indoor and outdoor rides)! It paired very easily both with my laptop running Zwift (using the same USB ANT+ dongle to control my trainer) and with my Vivoactive, so I can override the wrist HRM but still use the watch for GPS (and as a watch). I can't independently verify the accuracy, but it definitely seems more accurate and less volatile than what I was seeing with my watch, and it corresponds much more closely with perceived exertion.

Wahoo Replaced my HRM

***UPDATE*** I was able to get a replacement via Wahoo Customer Support. It was my first time having to contact Wahoo, and I was pleasantly suprised with how helpful and easy the process was. Just finished my ride, and the new HRM worked great. I'll continue to monitor and update as need. Raising my review to 4 stars, product works and Wahoo seems to stand behind there products. My Garmin HRM died after 2 years and I was looking forward to being able to track HR again with this product. It's terrible! I'll be doing VO2 max efforts and it's reading my HR at 130, when my heart is beating out of my chest closer to 185-190. Changed the battery multiple times with no luck. Looking into a return process or warranty process right now.
