The Vittoria Barzo is just what the wagon-wheel set ordered. It’s fast and smooth, but tight and grippy on hard, dry surfaces. Lean-dependent sipe angles mean the hard cornering grip doesn’t kick in until the tire is leaned over. This keeps rolling resistance to a minimum. Counter V-formation channels ease the cleaning of mud, dirt, and debris, so the tire sheds quickly if you find yourself in the sticky stuff. Although this is billed as a front or rear tire, we prefer to run it as a rear and use a tire with a more aggressive lug pattern up front.

These tires offer great traction and a sweet profile, with a supple ride. I switched from the Saguaro to the Barzo to eliminate the center rib and get a little more tooth, and it was the perfect solution.



HOWEVER.



After one season, they've started doing something I have never seen any tire do (at least never to the same extent): weeping massive amounts of sealant out the sidewalls, front and rear. Never had this issue through 3 or 4 sets of Saguaros. I'm giving a second star because they're sweet while they last and because technically I'm running the non-TNT casing tubeless, but like I said, I have had 5 or so sets of non-TNT Geax/Vittoria tires and never had this issue crop up.

When do I go for the Barzo? When the ground is rough, chewy (damp or dry), and I'm looking for a little more bite than the Peyote offers. At the Whiskey 50 off road race in Prescott, AZ, it has a 12 mile dirt road DH, then you go back up that 12 mile (4000') climb. Even on a course like that, we went for a Barzo up front because of how well it handles and how hard you can charge the technical sections. It provides both confidence in handling as well as from rock strikes with the additional height of the tread.

Great review. How are stable are the sidewall knobs in comparison to those on a tire like the Rocket Ron whose tall (but flimsy) sidewall knobs seem to fold over on themselves in hardpacked corners?

Chad - that's a major pet peeve of mine - squirmy knobs. These are stiff and don't squirm, don't undercut, and have proven to wear long in all conditions. The consistent radius of the tire's shape helps with this, too.
