Corner on carbons.

When you race, you want the best of low-rolling resistance and grip from your tires. The Veloflex Carbon Tubular features excellent grip for cornering as well as racing in wet conditions in a 320TPI corespun tubular.

Veloflex's tubulars are hand-sewn in Italy, where everyone knows cycling. The casing is Compressed Pes/Co corespun. This is layered on a Calicot puncture-resistant belt. "Calicot" is the French translation of the English word "calico." Basically, this refers to a style of weaving that's popular in India, whereby a layer of warp threads are woven one-under and one-over with a layer of weft. This gives the weave both strength and durability. The Calicot layer relies upon the tightness of the weave in order to achieve puncture-resistance.

To ensure both flexibility and an effective stiffness-to-weight ratio, the Carbon’s 320TPI, corespun casing comes into play. Essentially, this means that the casing fibers are made by twisting staple cotton fibers around a central filament core, creating one yarn from multiple fibers. As a result, the material is between 40 and 50% stronger than typically spun materials, while retaining a similar, if not lower, overall weight. Additionally, the 320TPI cotton casing provides the ideal stiffness-to-weight ratio. By this, we mean that the tire's weight hovers around 255 grams, while still retaining a perfect level of flexibility for cornering.

Veloflex uses as many naturally sourced materials as possible, and the Carbon tubular is no exception. The high-density casing was coated in natural rubber, creating a supple and responsive tire that absorbs energy and rebounds from irregularities in the road surface — again minimizing resistance. A herringbone pattern with a treadless center strip equates to grip in the corners and low rolling-resistance in the straights.

The Veloflex Carbon Tubular Tire is available in a 700c x 23mm size, and it weighs in around 255g each. The tread is Black and the sidewall is Gum colored. Please note that this tire is sold individually, and that it does not include adhesive.

Fast, fast tire!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Veloflex makes tires the old fashioned way...a couple old Italian ladies crafting functional artwork that feels better than an all you can eat pizza buffet. When I switched to tubulars a few years ago, my life was changed. Then I put the Carbons on my wheels and what I thought was cycling paradise got even better. The carbons roll super smooth, are grippy in 30 mph crit corners and last the entire race season. The casing is supple and soaks up road bumps like no Conti can touch. If you're on tubies, the carbons should be high on your list.

BATTERYSTAPLES, Over 4 years, I got 2 solid seasons out the Carbons. I had to replace one tire early due to a large slice in the tire. But I would say 1500-1700 miles.
