Protein to replenish.

Vega's 'sport' line of supplements was developed as a system for demanding athletes, composed of a multi-source, plant-based protein blend. The Protein Bar sits in as the ideal post-workout bar, as its 15 grams of complete protein works to strengthen and help regenerate your body's tired muscles. Even better, Vega has achieved this while retaining a completely vegan list of ingredients.

The bar does this through the use of SaviSeed (sacha inchi) protein, which is a rich, plant-based source of the amino acid tryptophan. Tryptophan itself is a key component of Serotonin -- the 'feel good' hormone that helps with the mental aspect of recovery. The formulation also consists of Omega-3s.

The Vega Sport Protein Bar comes in a box of 12 bars and is available in the flavors Chocolate Coconut and Chocolate Saviseed.

  • 15g protein
  • Vegan

This is an excellent meal replacement bar. The ingredient list is okay for strict health food and much better than the industry standard meal bar (Luna, Cliff, Probar, etc). About 40% of the ingredients are organic. I personally would have liked to see 100%, but that's me. There are 4 major types of sugar used in the bar. I would have liked to see them stick with one and have it be maple syrup or dates. (Agave syrup is not as healthy as the marketers lead you to believe). At 240 calories, overall it's an excellent choice for a meal replacement or post workout snack. The calorie breakdown is very balanced, due to the inclusion of saviseed, a new to market seed seed from Peru (also called Sacha Inchi seed). Saviseed is the richest plant-based source of Omega-3. Vega is the one company pushing Saviseed into the US market.

How does this bar taste? That is the #1 big question for any nutrition bar. I actually found this bar quite good. Yes, there is a bit of a gritty texture, but you'll find this with any protein bar (unless it's whey). The peppermint flavor is strong enough to take your mind of the gritty feel. The bar does use a chocolate coating, which adds sweetness and a candy bar feel. This bar is a bit drier than the meal bars that use nuts as ingredients and there are some white crispy things (like rice crispies) inside, that I couldn't quite identify in the ingredient list.

I'd say that there are much worse tasting bars out there and some better. * If you want a better tasting, less gritty bar, try this same Vega Sport Protein Bar in the Chocolate Coconut flavor. The coconut definitely smooths out the bar, giving the center a texture like a stiff 3 Musketeers candy bar.

Ultimately I feel that this is a very good choice nutrition bar for the common person. Yes, it has some sugar - but nearly every bar does. The inclusion of Omega-3 rich saviseed is excellent. And the candy bar like appearance and strong minty flavor should suit most people's tastes. Is it perfect - no. But what meal bar is?

    Overall.. I love it.
