Vega's 'sport' line of supplements was developed as a system for demanding athletes, comprised entirely of raw, whole food, and plant-based ingredients. The new Pre-Workout Energizer formulation was made specifically for athletes to consume before exercising, as the mix works to prepare the body for physical exertion.

The Pre-Workout Energizer contains a blend of 13 plant-based ingredients, including green tea, yerba mate, coconut oil, and rhodiola. These were chosen to provide immediate and sustained energy, increase endurance -- both in an aerobic and anaerobic capacity, as well as enhance mental focus and recovery.

The formulation also includes two complementary carbohydrates, which balance out to provide both instant and slower-burning fuel for your workouts. Organic sprouted brown rice syrup was added, as it has a high glycemic index (90), which enters the bloodstream quickly. This complements the organic palm nectar, which has a low glycemic index (35), providing slow, steady energy that will not spike or crash.

The Vega Sport Pre-Workout Energizer is available in the flavors Acai Berry and Lemon Lime. It comes in a 19oz container. Please note that Vega recommends you take its Pre-Workout Energizer 20 minutes before your workout.

Minimal Energy Boost

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this to help me hav a little extra something going into the gym after a day of work as I am always exhausted. I've been using this pre-workout for about two weeks now and will say I notice only a slight energy bump 1 out of every 4 times I use it. The other times I'd feel no different. A bit disappointed as my search for a natural pre-workout continues. Also, Acai Berry flavor stains orange whatever it touches so, including the plastic of your shaker bottle.

Using For years

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have used this for years and still get the same energy kick. No Side Effects just pure focus and energy lasts about 1.5 hours under extreme exertion!!

Tasty Boost

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

When you burn the candle from both ends you need a little extra boost. I was surprised by the tastiness in this Vega product as some of their others have a bit too much stevia for my liking. I noticed a different with their pre-workout and enjoy the taste.

Does the Job

I just tried this prior to workout and it definitely gave me a good energy boost. However, this does contain caffeine in the form of kombucha leaf, green tea leaf, and yerba mate leaf which in my view doesn't really make this much different than one of those all-natural energy drinks out which rely heavily of caffeine as the primary energy source.

Brazier (founder of Vega) mentions in one of his "Thrive" books that caffeine should only be used occasionally because it takes a toll on the body (what he refers to as biological debt) and hence by his own philosophy this is not something that should be taken very often. In fact he even acknowledged this in an interview from

"...but it's not the sort of thing (in reference to caffeine)that you'd want to have all the time, only before big events. I only have it before a major workout, in the form of Vega Sport, which has yerba mate and green tea. Yerba mate is a little more physical, whereas green tea is a little more mental, I find. So the combination of those two helps both."

Considering this I'd think there would at least be a mention of the recommended frequency of use on the label. Otherwise I imagine there are many people out there who are going to be taking this before every workout (daily for some) which again goes against Brazier's own philosophy.

I'm a little conflicted over how I should rate this product. On one hand it does what it's supposed to do and that's what really counts. On the other hand it's disappointing for the reasons I mentioned so I've decided just to deduct one star.

    Taste Good

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought to use as a pre work out, and it works! its not as powerful as C-4 but it not that weak either, it comes on more gradually and I'm pretty alert for the first hour and I don't crash after so now i use it as my morning coffee and take a half dose for when i want to hit the gym that afternoon.
