Description

Style, performance, performance, style, and performance.

Named after what it spits when you kick it into high gear, the Vans Men's Gravel Mountain Bike Shoe is like wearing a nitrous-fed stock car on your foot. The synthetic leather and mesh upper gives the Gravel durability and breathability so you won't burn up while you're riding and so you won't have to replace it after every season. The removable hook-and-loop strap means you can really clamp the Gravel down on your foot for added pedal power and to keep trail debris on the trail, and the Trax rubber WaffleGrip tread pattern keeps your foot from accidentally flying off the pedal.

Does this shoe have a stiff sole?

Check out Chad's review:

I have been wearing Five Ten shoes for a few years now and they just can't be beat for Downhill. The soles are super sticky and stiff making it very hard to slip a pedal. These are just slightly too soft and not quite sticky enough to be great for downhill. I do like these for dirt jumping where you want to be able to move your feet on the pedals easily. If you are looking for an alternative to Five Ten these aren't far off. They also have the killer waffle pattern.

Vans Gravel MTB run small...

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

WARNING: These shoes run 1/2 size small. I have been wearing vans for 35 years and for the past 25 years I have always worn a mens size 9. When I ordered a 9 and put them on they were too small (my toes touched the end of the shoe). I reordered a size 9.5 to correct this and a 10.0 would have also worked (just a little big but not much I figure!) order at least a +.5 size to avoid the issue I had. Besides this these are awesome shoes. I use 5-10s and these and like the Vans more because they are almost as sticky but my foot stays cooler on hot days.

Light and sticky

Have a couple pairs of Five Ten's and these are way lighter. Soles seem to be almost as sticky. So considering how much cheaper they are than five tens. They are a great alternative.

Vans rule!

Vans rule and the gravel is no exception. Lighter and less bulky than other popular competitive mtnbike platform shoes. To me that's a plus.

Bottoms are plenty stiff, traxx rubber plenty sticky.

True to size for me anyway.

Best mtnbike platform pedal for me.

Nice-n-Easy!

I have never owned a pair of mountain bike specific shoes before and I choose these because they look like your typical skate shoe, and you can?t beat the price! The sole is pretty stiff, but the shoe itself is light and really comfortable. The waffle grip helps keep your foot securely stuck to the peddle so you can avoid the infamous shin-er. I couldn?t be happier with my first ?real? bike shoe purchase.

Can't beat the price? Are you kidding? I've worn Vans most of my adult life, but the quality seemed to have gone down hill and the prices went up about ten years ago. I was initially interested in these because I've been wanting to get another pair, but I can't justify a $100 pair of shoes just for mountain biking.

I love these shoes for riding, feels like they turn my flats into clipless. They look great as well, I'm a sucker for an all black shoe, and these fit the bill. Understated, comfy, and light. One thing, these are the exact opposite as non-marking soles, it's like they were made to mark floors, so be prepared to do some extra mopping! 10/10 from an unemployed bike bum.

Great option for female riders

Although this is technically a Men's shoe, the unisex sizing makes this a good option for female riders. I normally wear a 6.5 in US Women's sizes, and the Van's Gravel size 5 is an excellent fit. Fit is similar to the Van's Rowley XL3. Sticks to the pedals, stiff sole, and super comfortable. I would definitely recommend them to other female riders.

Bonus: They are completely free of the color pink, flowers, butterflies or other horrifying nonsense commonly found on women-specific gear. Hurray!

Note, for strict veggie riders, it is difficult to determine if the upper is real leather or synthetic. They look synthetic, the website says they are synthetic, but the shoe tag says leather (see photo)

This is just a follow up on what dirtIsForGirls said about the materials the shoes are made of. I contacted Vans and asked them about the discrepancy between the shoe label, which says leather upper, and what this web site and Vans' own web site says about the construction material. Both Web sites say that the shoes are made from synthetic leather. Vans said the shoes are indeed synthetic leather, but they didn't have an explanation for the apparent mislabeling of the shoe.

Well, the picture there show animal hide for the uppers. See the picture that looks like a pelt followed between pictures of shoes? Yep. Not veggie.

Even though I'm not a Girl I find these "gender-specific" pink, flower, bee, etc stuff pretty annoying too. Helpful was it for me as a veggie !

Sticky With Style

If you love Van's old school style, but appreciate how amazing riding with 5.10's is...then the Gravel is for you.

The Gravel's are extremely durable, comfortable, and most importantly stick to flat pedals like glue.

I would say they have about 90% of the grip of 5.10's, but I actually prefer them as I have always felt 5.10's were almost too sticky.

They have a great, old skool, Van's style and are a legit alternative to 5.10's.

Are these true to the size?

Responded on

They are indeed true to size.

Just got my shoes in the mail. I ordered a size 11 and they are tight! Not true to size at all. My heel isn't even in the shoe and my toes are touching the front. I don't even know if a 12 will fit.
