Excel at all three disciplines.

Triathlon shorts need to not only be versatile across three disciplines, but they also need to perform in each. Having hydrodynamic shorts is pointless, for example, if they don't breathe during a hot ride or run. The TYR Competitor 9in Tri Shorts were designed to not only accommodate, but also excel in the swim, bike, and run.

For the bulk of the Competitor Tri shorts' construction, TYR used a blend of polyester and spandex. Polyester is easily the most versatile fiber in sports apparel. Case in point is the venerable Lycra material. It provides a supportive, yet non-constrictive, structure, while remaining soft-to-the-touch. Additionally, with the elasticity of the added spandex content, the resulting material is granted a four-way stretch. So, your freedom of movement is guaranteed, regardless of the discipline at hand. You'll also find that, when combined, this material is quite efficient at managing moisture. So, whether it be water or perspiration, moisture is moved away from the skin and transported to the quick-drying surface of the fabric. As a result, you remain dry and comfortable over the two land legs of your competition.

TYR designed the Competitor Tri shorts for competitors, meaning that they're ready for endurance racing. They feature a beaded silicone leg hem, a stretch-woven drawcord, and an ample, nine-inch inseam. As a result of the latter, the shorts experience more surface area coverage, which results in an increase in both compressive support and resistance to chafing.

Furthering this level of comfort, TYR included its new Competitor AMP chamois. This insert features a minimalist construction to provide enough support for the bike leg without inhibiting comfort in either the swim or run. And because of the swim, TYR also designed the Competitor to be water-resistant and quick-drying.  For storage of your race nutrition, TYR has also included a zippered rear pocket.

The TYR Competitor 9in Tri Shorts are available in five sizes from X-Small to X-Large and in the colors Black, Black/yellow, and Black/red.

NOTE:  To cater to different needs and budgets, TYR engineers two triathlon lines. Competitor garments offer a compressive fit, while carbon garments offer a super compressive fit for a second-skin feel. You should select your same, standards size for both carbon and competitor garments but expect slightly different fits.
How to Measure:
For best results take measurements over your underwear, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Chest:
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Waist:
Bend to the side and measure around the place where your waist bends, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Hip:
Stand with feet together and measure around the fullest part of the hip.
Torso:
With someone's help, run a tape measure full circle from your shoulder at the neck, over the fullest part of your chest, down through the center of your crotch and back up to the starting point.

Pad has rough edges

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love TYR. These shorts are cut perfectly. They fit exactly on my body and are very well made. The problem is that the pad was a total afterthought. The edges of the pad feel like they rub harshly against my crotch area. I can't seem to use this short for more than 30 miles on the bike without it irritating me. On runs and swims it's great. I have really tried to get used to this short.
