Celebrating the start of the new season with a brand new crankset only to need another around the solstice isn't our idea of efficiency. Unless you're a pro crushing the DH race circuit, you should be riding on componentry that gives you the freedom to take risks and do something stupid every once in a while without falling apart. Enter Truvativ's well-respected Descendant line. For 2017, parent company SRAM called for an upgrade, and the resulting Descendant 11-Speed BB30 Direct Mount Crankset delivers new, streamlined aesthetics as well as SRAM's inventive new X-SYNC chainring profile.
In starting with solid 7000-series aluminum, Truvativ gave the Descendant the enviable blend of lightness and bump-crushing rigidity that trail and all-mountain/enduro riders need as distinctions between categories continue to grow blurrier. While saving weight with aluminum, Truvativ also added a direct mount ring, slimming down the overall design and cutting grams compared to bulkier bolted designs. Anticipating riders wanting to add extra protection to vulnerable chainrings, Truvativ made the Descendant compatible with bash guards, which is good, because you'll want to protect the X-SYNC chainring's impressive profile for as long as possible. SRAM's efficient new chainring hasn't earned its extensive praise for nothing: squared-off teeth cling to your chain and refuse to let in everything from bouncy root lattices to thick patches of mud.
