Description

Remember when linear pull brakes replaced cantilevers on mountain bikes years ago? Kinda makes you wonder why cantilevers have remained the brake of choice for 'crossers since the olden days. Some say the issue is one of clearance over and around the tire, as mud can be a particular challenge for racers. We're not sold on this notion. Maybe it's like leg shaving -- nothing more than tradition. That said, the folks at TRP have proven that linear pull brakes have a home on cyclocross bikes as well. Their CX8.4 Mini LP Ti Brakeset is a shorter version of their CX9 brakeset.

While we love to race our 'cross bikes in the winter, we ride them all year long as commuters, foul weather trainers, or for touring. And the reality is that typical cantilevers sometimes lack the total stopping power that we need. That's where the TRP CX8.4 Brakes come into the picture. While they're great for racing, they also give us more confidence in traffic and on long mountain descents. And like your initial revelations about the ease of setup with linear pull brakes back in the day, these are equally simple to install and tune for powerful, smooth braking performance.

The TRP CX8.4 Mini LP Ti Brakeset is available in Black or Red. The arms are 84mm long and are made of forged and CNC machined aluminum. They use titanium mounting hardware and lightweight, easily replaceable road-style brake pads. We find that they provide optimum lever feel and braking performance when paired with Shimano levers, and for SRAM and Campy levers, we find the cx8.4 is ideal.

Best rim brakes

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

You will be surprised at how much you've been missing. These things really work. I own four pairs and until I switch to disc these will be my go to.

1.5 Years of Hard Riding

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have these on my BH RX1 cross bike that I use for commuting and everything else. They still look great and work well after 1.5 years. I was using them with Shimano Dura-Ace. They worked fine, but the braking feel is very on/off. I suspect if I did SRAM like they suggested it would feel better. I recently converted the BH to a flat handle bike with a mountain bike groupset. The braking feel with mt bike brakes levers is really good and really powerful, much better than with the Shimano road group. They are much better than cantilever's in either setup. No brake chatter. I have to keep an eye on the tension, but that is easy to adjust.
