Item # TLD0273

A masterpiece of versatility.

It's been a while since the folks at Troy Lee Designs designed and built an all-mountain helmet. As is always the case with TLD, they came out with a bang. The A-1 Helmet is a definite departure from the Troy Lee norm, but it's built with TLD's legendary attention to detail and durability.

The first thing you notice about the A-1 is its sculpted, almost artistic shape. More than simple aesthetics, the shape of the A-1 increases air flow through the helmet to keep your head dry and cool. This is especially important when you're grinding out a punishing climb in the heat of the summer. Airflow is directed through 16 cooling vents–6 intake, 4 multi-directional, and 6 output vents. The shape of the visor, which can be adjusted a full inch on the fly, was also dictated by airflow. Moisture management is assisted by a nanowick synthetic liner with CoolMax panels.

The durable polycarbonate shell surrounds single-impact EPS foam for light weight and proven protection. The visor is made with high-impact polypropylene for additional eye protection. Troy Lee used super-durable anodized aluminum hardware throughout the A-1's construction. The A-1's customizable fit is taken care of by triple-position stabilizer baskets and a multi-position cam-lock adjustable stabilizer with +/- 20mm of movement.

The Troy Lee Designs A-1 Helmet comes in three sizes: XS/S, M/L, and XL/XXL. It is available in Gold and Black.

  • Multi-position cams for optimal fit
  • Fuller-coverage helmet
  • 16 big vents for airflow

My head measures about 23 inches, so sort of in between M/L and XL/XXL.. should I go with the M/L? I dont want it bouncing around but I also obviously don't want it too small

Hi Ben,

I would always error on the small side with something like this. Better off having the helmet all the way opened up as opposed to totally cranked down. If the size you decide to go with doesn't work, let me know and I can help you out with an exchange. Feel free to reach out with any other questions. - Matthew Pizza - Expert Gearhead

Super Comfortable

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Fits snug to my dome and is lightweight. Only thing I don't like are the straps. I haven't yet found a way to get them to fit perfectly.

The Most Comfortable Helmet Ever

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: M/L

This is the most comfortable half shell ever. Apart from feeling like a ball cap, it breathes great, and has the rad troy lee styling. Some of the colors are a little over the top, but you can get the drone edition. I have also crashed really bad, and I am still here, so more evidence that it rocks.

Stellar Half Shell

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: M/L

Lets face it , half shells can look and feel a bit terrible. The Troy Lee A1 however does not disappoint. Not only in my opinion does it look great but it also performs incredible.

It is very comfortable and does not have any pressure points or uncomfortable spots at all. Worth every penny.

I have not found this helmet unusually warm at all.

please email me at rlogan@backcountry.com for any additional insight.

Great helmet

Maybe it's because I've used the same helmet for the last 5 years, but this helmet is a huge upgrade. The fit is super snug yet comfortable. Easily can adjust to your head size. Very breathable and light. Also looks good.

    Light and Airy

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Extremely comfortable and very light. Lots of vents to let plenty of air through. Peace of mind knowing your dome is well protected. Looks great too!

    Light and Airy

    Great fit, super light!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The A1 Helmet has a great fit, is super light and has a great ventilation. Good compatibility with goggles also which is key for me..The helmet adjustments are easy to use and simple enough..wearing the helmet out on long rides is no issue, can wear it all day..

    Very happy with this purchase.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This helmet fits true to size. It is very light weight and comfortable. The adjustable head band keeps the helmet in place while riding. So far, I've only worn the helmet in cooler temperatures, 16˚F - 55˚F, and didn't notice my head being either too cold or too warm..... just comfortable. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

    Awesome helmet

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Bought this helmet Spring 2015 and couldn't be happier. It feels like a helmet should, not some bulky piece of foam/plastic on the top of your head. It's been through a couple crashes already and does its job. Also the ventilation is great.
I've used it on the trails in Northern MN, Montana, and Telluride/ Grand Junction, CO. Highly recommend this product, not the cheapest helmet out there but more than likely your bike isn't a huffy either, so $111.20 isn't bad.

    Great Helmet

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I love this helmet. I've tried on numerous helmets and this is by far my favorite. The padding inside makes it one of the most comfortable helmets I've worn. I like how it comes down on the side to protect your temples and comes down in the back. You really feel protected wearing this helmet. I haven't worn it riding in really hot weather, but it seemed to ventilate well on a normal day. I seem to have a hard time finding helmets to fit right ( I have a big head) but the M/L worked great.

How "big" is your big head? :) I've tried like 4 M/L women's helmets that have been very tiny, spending a fortune on return shipping! Thanks for your help!!

    Great MTB helmet

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: M/L

I saw a cyclist with this helmet on at a 12 hour MTB race and it looked nice so I asked him about it and he said it was the most comfortable helmet he had ever worn. So I bought one and I agree. I love it. It looks nice, fits well, and I basically forget it is on. The visor comes in handy if you are riding into the sun. I bought the white with black because it matches my bike but that is the only thing I would have done differently--I like the grey with green better. I have only worn it a few times but on long rides over 3 hours.

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size

His review says all you need to know about this helmet. It saved his brain. That dent in his helmet is the result of a VERY hard crash at high speed (I was there). The TLD A1 was up to the task leaving his brain virtually damage free.

    Saved

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

I would like to thank Mr Troy Lee for saving my ass (head). Seriously though, helmet is extraordinarily comfortable and lightweight to boot. I highly recommend this product to all members of the #endurobro(ad) crowd.

Not Rocket Red ... more orange

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

This is a great helmet, fits me really well and I'm sure I'll get plenty of use from it ... but it's definitely not the red I thought I was getting. So much more orange than red. The chin strap is almost fluorescent orange. It's going back for a different color.

    The best hemet, really

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I seem to have a hard time finding helmets that fit my head. I'm either between sizes, or my head just doesn't fit the shape quite right. I try on helmets every time I go to a bike shop just in case I find the one that feels good. They never do.

I thought I'd try the A1 after reading nothing but glowing reviews, all of which seem to praise its fit and comfort. Amazingly, everyone is right; this is by far the best fitting, most comfortable, and highest quality mountain bike helmet I've ever worn. I've only used it twice on singletrack so far, but that's enough for me to know that this one is the new benchmark.

The shape fits my head perfectly, which is amazing because it seems to fit everyone's heads perfectly. The padding really is better than that offered by competitors. Usually, there's a thin amount of padding at only the points where the helmet makes the most contact with your head, usually at the forehead and running up the top . The A1 covers every point of potential contact, and with a pad that's higher quality and more plush than any I've seen elsewhere. After three hours on the trail, I felt no pressure points, no hot spots, and no need to adjust or remove it.

It also doesn't flop around or shift while riding over rough sections. It just never moved. The dial in the back didn't back off after hours of riding, either. Once I put it on and had it how I wanted it, that's where it stayed until I took it off.

It also looks awesome, but you don't need a review to tell you that.

If you're reading this, you probably want the A1 already. I would recommend you forget about the price and try it. It's the most important piece of gear you're going to use, so it's worth a little extra money. If it fits like it seems to fit everyone, you'll very quickly forget about the cost and realize that every other helmet falls in a separate category. I was a skeptic, but if I crack this one tomorrow on the trail, I'll throw down the money for another one without hesitation.
