Item # TOP000T

Topeak's Alien Multi Tools have become a staple in many cyclists' hydration packs due to their low weight and numerous features. For the new Alien III Multi Tool this includes 25 tools in total, all wrapped in a sub-300-gram package.

Like all Aliens, the III splits in two for ease of use, but unlike the II, this one is smaller for better packability. It uses a pressed stainless steel frame with engineering-grade plastic to provide the strength needed in a lightweight design. The tool bits are made from chromoly steel for a precise and durable tool. The Alien III is also equipped with a chain tool that's compatible with all singlespeeds, and most multi-speed chains — including 10-speed chains.

The Alien III also comes with a chain hook to assist with chain repairs. As for Allen bits, this Alien has them covered from 2 to 10mm, with a T25 Torx also included. 8, 9, and 10mm box-end wrenches, along with 14, 15, and Mavic/Shimano spoke wrenches, and #2 Phillips/flat-head screwdrivers round out the Alien III's features.

The Topeak Alien III Multi Tool comes with a compartment for two chain pins and a nylon bag to protect the Alien in a pack.

One tool to rule them all

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This thing simply has it all. Everything you would need while out for a ride. It has good solid construction. Many of the tools lock in place for added ease of use and safety. It even has a spot hidden away for two spare chain pins. My biggest surprise was that it is actually quite small. I would guess that it's only about 3 inches long by 1.5-2 inches across. It easily fits in my larger saddle bag with a patch kit, extra tire levers, and two spare road tubes. If you find yourself going for long rides on quiet roads, this would be a good investment to keep from getting stranded.

simply the best

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I upgraded from the original alien (which I gave to someone in need on a long ride) and haven't looked back. This is not a minimalist tool, I ride with a crank bros 19 when I'm simply out for a quick ride. However, with this thing, I put a boot and a couple of quicklinks for my chain in the case for long rides. You really wouldn't need anything else if you're suffering from a mechanical beyond a pump and a tube. That said, I've never had a mechanical (or seen someone else's) that couldn't be fixed by this thing. I've even broken it out when folks don't have the appropriate tool in their kit at the cars.
