Now it's a shoulder bag ... now it's two panniers.

In the days of old, villagers might have mistaken you for some kind of wizard if they saw you pull out the Timbuk2 Tandem Pannier and turn it from a slim-profiled shoulder bag into dual saddle bags. Nowadays, people see it and decide you must be a smart traveler.

  • Two bags in one—the Tandem Pannier can turn from a single shoulder bag into two panniers (held together by magnets) which conveniently hang on each side of your bike rack
  • Internal padded slash pocket holds a 15in laptop, important documents, and poems you wrote in the park
  • Weatherproof material, flap closure with buckle, and weather flaps which keep out grime and moisture to protect your contents
  • Reflective vista loops for riding at night and for attaching your blinky light

Timbuk 2 tandem

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Just started commuting on my specialized turbo and needed a way to carry my things to work. This panniers are awesome! they are identical with the same pockets and hold a lot of stuff. They have a waterproof material on the outside and are abrasive resistant as well. One of my coworkers laid my bike down on a turn and the bags didn't even rip, just got dirty. Would recommend these to any commuter out there!

My go to for Commuting

These panniers are great for commuting to and from work! I made the mistake of initially buying a cheaper set up, which broke on day one. These panniers are much more solid and I feel safe toting my stuff (including laptop) around on them. I like the option to add the strap so that the panniers become a bag for when I arrive at my destination. The velcro is sturdy however it does take awhile to put them on and take them off the bike. I think next time around I may spend more money for an interlocking system.

    Lots of space

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These are great for going to the store, commuting to work, or just around town so you don't have to wear the sweaty backpack. They go on and off the bike super easy. And the laptop holder inside is great for keeping your computer secure. Love these bags even more when the price is right.

    Great for the commute

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These panniers are great for the average commute. My 15in laptop fits in here no problem, along with a change of clothes, shoes, lunch, and whatever else I think I might need for the day. Much easier to ride a bike with all your gear not on your back.

The pockets/organization is really well thought out as is the case with any Timbuk2 product that I have ever owned. Waterproof material and large overlap of the lid ensure that your gear doesn't get wet if you get caught in a storm.

These are my first panniers and they are great. I would however like some that have a little more reliable rack attachment than the velcro that is on here. I had a mishap where the velcro came undone and the pannier flew into my spokes and now has a big hole in the bottom.

Are these waterproof like dry bag style?? I can't tell how the top closure works and if rain would get into the pack?

    Perfect for Commuting!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These panniers are wonderful. I have a small bike frame and struggle with heel strike whenever I try to attach anything to my back rack which makes it pretty much useless. These are my solution! No heel strike - yay! They are large enough to fit all of my work gear in one and clothes into the other. I ordered the black and they travel to meetings well. My husband liked mine so much we ordered him a set. The issue with the bungee cord has been taken care of. The 2015 model uses velcro to secure the bottom of the bags to the rack or bike frame. Very happy and looking forward to many happy years of commuting!

    Absolutely Perfect

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This was exactly what I was looking for! It's perfect. It's durable and has a TON of space. The zippers on the sides are great for personal items like keys or a waller. It's definitely waterproof, but what really makes it great is how easily it securely attaches to the bike and comes off. It also looks great walking around with it after the ride.

    Great setup

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This Pannier setup was a key buy for my commuter bike. have used quite a bit in the last year and it has worked awesome! Easy to use, lots of room, fits the computer every once in awhile.

    I Miss These Guys

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Got these around 4 months ago and they've been great. I agree that the velcro can easily mess up shorts, but that's a minor detail. They've held up very well when commuting in the rain and have kept a good sized load dry. I've gotten lots of compliments on them when out and about. Love the shoulder strap. Not too reflective, but decent. The velcro has been quite stable when attached to the bike, but also easy and quick to pop off, which is good for the most part, but in a city with a big enough amount of crime, they were robbed right off of my bike yesterday while I was waiting for a light. So, good and bad. Still, I'll probably be ordering another pair soon!

Beware of the Velcro and Pants

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I used these for about year while commuting. The velcro that keeps the flaps down can ruin a pair of pants. The hard part of the vecro is on the side of the bag. When the bag is full of stuff and the flap does not extend all the way to the bottom of velcro, the hard plastic part of the velcro can pull at the fibers of a pair of pants when using the panniers as a shoulder bag. It killed a pair of dress pants before I figured out the problem. I returned the bags to REI and got Ortleib bags instead. They held up well to a year of daily commuting and were just the right size. The bags also looked sleak on the bike.

    Good small/mediumish packing

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These are a good way to get the backpack off your back - I've found they pretty much fit what I could stuff into a regular-sized backpack. Good in the rain, and really stable on the rack with the lower velcro straps to help keep them tight to the wheel. Very easy to pop on and off - I use them with a PDW rack.

    Versatile Bag

Picked this for overnight rides where all I need is a change of clothes and snacks. They have plenty of room and easily mount on the back of my bike. The handle is great for carrying them around when not riding and the reflective loops are a nice addition.

      This bag has been great

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've used this bag every work day since I've received it. It did not leak at all when I took it through rain. I can fit a change of clothes in it very easily. I also like how you can attach the shoulder strap, and carry it around town as a messenger bag.

The only downside I can think of is that it attaches to the bike through Velcro straps, which doesn't instill a lot of confidence, but they haven't come loose yet on my relatively smooth commute.

how big (in Liters)are these and how do they attach to the bike?

      Best Answer

They sit over your rear rack and then clip to the sides of it with anodized clips. When you lift the panniers off the bike, magnets snap them together so they just look like an over the shoulder bag. I am not sure what they are in Liters but they are about 500 cubic inches each.

      The Tandem Pannier

      The Tandem Pannier

Hello. I am almost tempted to buy this; however, I do not see a picture of someone carrying it with the so called shoulder strap. If there really is a shoulder strap, can I see a picture of it especially the part sitting on your shoulder? Ty
