While we have nothing against the retro cap style of your typical urban fixie, sometimes versatility has to win out over style. Thule's Pack 'n Pedal Commuter Backpack plays the staid, mature older sibling to the devil-may-care messenger bag look, putting function first in a pack that transitions easily between life on two wheels and life on two feet.

The main compartment is sealed by a roll top closure, is waterproof, and incorporates reflective elements, but the pack also includes a stowable rain cover with yet more reflective detailing. When it comes to storage, this bag's cup runneth over. It's got an assortment of internal organization, easily accessible outer pockets, and a padded, removable 15in laptop or tablet sleeve. It's even got a reinforced (Thule goes so far as to claim "crush-proof") pocket for glasses and the like. Despite its ability to blend in with pedestrians, the pack features a few cycling-specific storage features, including a helmet attachment point and a U-lock pocket.

Excellent for what I need!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is my first "commuter" pack, and so far I'm impressed. While not as flashy as a Chrome bag, the pack has everything I need for a good commuting experience. The roll-up top is nice for keeping the weather out and makes the pack pretty compact when fastened down. The straps are comfortable and the pack sits nicely on my back but still lets enough air through to help with cooling. The re-enforced sunglass pocket comes in really handy as does the stowable rain cover and helmet attachment. The best part is that the pack seems extremely durable. It's not something I want to replace any time soon.
+1 for Thule on this one!
