Description

Why bother removing your wheel?

“Your bike ain't goin' nowhere!” says the Thule Big Mouth bike rack. The Big Mouth's titular Big Mouth is a clamp that securely grabs your bike's frame to hold it in place without you having to remove the front wheel. With this secure bike carrier, all you do is put your wheels in the track, tighten the straps and attach the clamp arm. The Big Mouth self adjusts for whatever bike frame you happen to be carrying, and its dual locking system locks the rack to your car and the bike to the rack, so unless they have a cutting torch or the key, nobody's getting your bike.

Cross-Country Worthy

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Made the trek back and forth to New York twice using this bike rack. I was worried about it through Wyoming with the high winds but this thing held up the entire time, never had an issue, lots of bugs on the handle bars. Quick, durable and very effective.

Easy to install and use

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Replaced my existing bike mount with the Big Mouth Mount, installation took less than 10 minutes are works perfectly with my thule rails. The mount securely holds my Specialized 29er. Don't have to worry about it moving despite rough roads on the way to the trail head.

Street race-ably solid mount!

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have had one of these for about a year now, and am about to invest in my second, i love it! It holds anything from my road bike, to by 47 lb old school downhill bike, with basically no adjustment. Bikes go on in about 20 seconds, off in 5! Lock works well, though if im somewhere i dont trust, i still use a cable lock as well for safety.
I have pulled into my garage twice with my bike on this rack on top of my car. One of the times i had to replace the 2 straps that hold the wheels in place as i snapped them both, but neither time did the bike come off of the car, or damage the car in any way. Quite to the contrary i now have large dents in the wood on top of my garage. So i trust this rack to take bumpy corners at 50mph with a bike on it, as well as to drive as fast as i feel okay about beating my suspension up down any bumpy gravel road. Great durable product with an awesome design! highly recommended!
I use this product on the OEM roof bars for a volvo S60. They are square bars similar to thule ones. This works well, and its easy to rach to load my bike

Super quick

Love this thing. If it takes more than 20 seconds to put your bike on top and 10 seconds to take it off then you are doing something wrong. Super convenient compared to taking a tire off. Very solid clamping system holds the bike in place, seems good to go even on the highway. Tire clamp adapters allow it to fit both mountain and road tires solidly. Fits well on yakima bars on a subaru, have not tried it on any stock rack.

Will this work with standard rails on Subaru Tribeca? I also have 800 mm carbon rims that it would need to accommodate.

Well built, not bad

I have had a Thule big mouth for probably about 8 years. It's a well built bike mount. I had some issues with the grip of the clamp on my large framed mountain bike. I use a bungee cord around the clap to make it a bit more solid and give me a little better piece of mind if I am driving on the freeway. I really don't have any major complaints on the build or functionality, but I really don't use it anymore. Since moving to a hitch mount bike rack I can say that I will probably never use a roof mount rack again. Putting the bike up on the roof rack and taking it down can be a pain. I have to open one of the back doors on my Jeep Grand Cherokee and step up on the door sill in order to reach the bike. It's a total pain versus using a hitch mounted rack. Overall, its a good product, but no longer for me.

So are you going to sell your Big Mouth mount??

Responded on

Brianne - Sorry for the super late reply. I did not see your comment until this morning. I am guessing you have probably moved on, but I would consider selling it. It is still mounted on my Jeep, but hasn't been used in a long time.

Does not fit

Although this is a nice bike rack it does not mount on factory installed aerodynamic cross bars. Order another brand unless you have Thule bars. Backcountry was great about exchanging it.

Is the mouth on that Big Mouth padded? I have a carbon road bike and a full-susser, and I want to make sure this rack can handle both. IE, I don't want to crush or scratch up the carbon roadie.

Thanks!

Responded on

The clamp has some nice firm rubber padding on the jaws, I can't think of a way it would scratch the carbon unless there was some excessive road grit between the frame and the clamp.

So is this rack compatible with stock subaru cross bars? or would i need to purchase other cross bars for this rack?

Responded on

Duhhhh you need to have thule crossbars or you need an adapter to make it fit the stock crossbars. This was already covered above, Steve.

It's good rack

I think this rack is great. I needed an adapter for my Subaru but it does the job.

Thule Big Mouth Bike Mount

I've used the Thule Big Mouth Bike Mount for one season and it actually holds my downhill bike or road bike rock solid. Although I've always used a fork mount rack in the past, this setup is really nice for muddy rides when you don't want to throw a dirty wheel in the car. The only thing I don't love is that there is significant added height when you put the bike on top in this configuration.

Does this bike mount work with Saturn factory crossbars? I have a Vue (2006) and it came with a roof rack and crossbars. I want to put a bike rack on it without having to buy new crossbars.

Thule Big Mouth

This thing is super easy to use and real sturdy. I can get my BMX bike mounted up in less than 5 minutes and have no worries about taking a cruise up the highway. I definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a solid carrier that doesn't require you to remove your front wheel.
