Description

A helium-filled Andre the Giant in lingerie. OK, that’s a nasty image.

The Thomson X4 Stem is stronger and lighter than their older Elite stem. A good part of this weight savings comes from the change in design. Where the Elite used an internal wedge clamp, this X4 relies on a more traditional split clamp for the steerer interface. While it meant losing the knee-saving shape on the Elite, the clamp bolts are pretty minimal given the sculpted design.

The Thomson X4 Stem is CNC machined from 7000 series aluminum alloy. It has a 31.8mm clamp diameter. It's available in Black or Silver and with a zero (90) or ten (100) degree rise.

Gold standard

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Listen, if you want a stem, seat post, or bar, Thompson is the gold standard. They don't make anything that works ok. They make amazing pieces that work perfectly.

Not stoked on your stock stem? Look here

Thompson doesn't mess around when it comes to Aluminum. So much so, that Coke asked them to design a new state of the art 12 oz. can to take a can of Coke to the moon. Jokes.

But in all fairness, there isn't anyone out there who uses aluminum better. The X4 stem is a pure manifestation of the goodness that Thompson is capable of turning out. All of the review below are spot on. I do recommend this product.

Ride and Forget it

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This stem has been on all my mountain bikes for the last decade. It works. Never a problem. Bombproof and when your descending porcupine rim in Moab you don't every have to worry about it. Just ride...

Demand the best.

While this stem is, in my opinion, the only stem on the market for mountain bikes, it's timeless and classic on road builds as well. Seeing a beautiful steel bike, with a Thomson post and stem is an instant nod to the owner of the bike, acknowledging their place in the cult. Its just that good, and that universal. From BMX Bikes, to Dirt Jumpers, DH bikes, XC racers, AM/Trail, roadies, cross riders, commuters, and general bike dirt bags all respect the timeless made in USA Thomson. Buy one, no question.
The only gripe is when they changed the bolts from 4mm to 3mm heads to prevent over torquing. This only lead me to a stripped bolt and a stripped 3mm wrench. Quick trip to the hardware store solved that!

Rock Solid.

Pick black or silver. In my mind, there aren't any other options. Sure, it's a bit industrial-looking compared to some of the modernistic carbon stems out there, but it's also tried and trusted by everyone who logs major saddle time. When you're deep in the cave, you don't care what the thing looks like, you just care that it works and it doesn't stop working. Thomson will never let you down.

Upgrade

Had a stock rky mtn hard tail. rky mtn's tend to have short stems, upgrading to this put me higher up in the cock pit and on top of the ride. It was a great upgrade giving me a better feel and more control. and you can never go wrong with Thomson. Unbreakable.

If the answer is Thomson...

...Should you have asked the question?

Let's see...
Made in the USA to exacting standards
Backed by a company that stands by their products, no questions asked
Light
Uber-stiff
Dead sexy

Seriously though, I have been riding X4 stems on my road and CX bikes since the DAY they were available. NEVER has an issue. No bar slippage, no steerer damage (talking to you FSA). It's an install and forget it piece.

If there's a bike in my quiver, it's wearing Thomson stems and posts...well, except the seatmast bike! :)

Nice'n Shiny

Good strong, sleek looking stem. Thompson has always made top quality products and this one is no different. Pretty light. I had this on my Yeti 575 a year back and loved it. Definitely worth the 100.

Brownchickenbrowncow!

Light, strong, very pleasing to the eye. Not much bad to say about this stem. Made my bike ride much better, really opened up the cockpit and gave me more room. Great Buy!

The OG stem

There is nothing I don't like about this stem. The machine work, the anodization, the logo work all the way down to the hardware they use they really hit a homerun. To be honest with all of the meticulous detail that this stem has it looks like it could fit in just fine on a space shuttle, wait they crash, maybe a Masserati. Not to mention you get good old fashioned made in the USA quality right out of Georgia.
