Thomson Carbon Riser Handlebar $160.00
A leap into the world of carbon.
Thomson is a name that carries serious clout in the cycling world due to its aluminum expertise. But, that's quickly changing as Thomson systematically branches out into the world of fibers and epoxies with products like this Carbon Riser Handlebar.
Due to the complexities of carbon fiber, this is one of the first products not manufactured at Thomson's US facility, and likewise, it's the first component not cut from a piece of aerospace-grade aluminum. However, the aerospace connection remains with these bars, as they're made by Toray -- the same plant that pushes out carbon fiber components for both Boeing and Airbus. And to ensure a Thomson-level-of-quality, the bars are certified to EN and tested to DIN+ standards.
The bars are made using Nano Epoxy Resin for very high-impact-resistance, and they're also made in one piece -- not three pieces co-molded and glued together. An EPS mandrel, unlike other manufacturers who commonly employ an inflatable bladder, is used during the layup and molding process in order to avoid wrinkles inside of the layup during molding. For added strength, 1.5K woven carbon ends prevent damage to the unidirectional fibers during impact.
This results in an incredibly strong structure with stress risers reduced to an absolute minimum. However, structure is one thing, but ergonomics and ride quality are whole different story. And because this is Thomson's foray into carbon handlebars, it has the advantage of starting with a clean slate. In fact, by working closely with athletes, Thomson has dialed in a shape that's destined to become a favorite.
There's a mild four degree up-sweep, with a six degree back-sweep. This permits a wrist-happy interface that doesn't interfere with the leverage needed to guide the bike. The rise is minimal at 12mm, and its 730mm width leaves plenty of room to cut the bar to the perfect size.
The Thomson Carbon Riser Handlebar is compatible with 31.8mm clamp diameter stems. It features 12mm of rise and a 730mm width. Lastly, these bars are available in the color Black.

- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Nothing like a Thomson product for high quality and great workmanship. Bar has nice increment marks if you are so inclined to cut it down. The bar matches the full line of Thomson posts and stems and the Thomson fan can now have a full Thomson cockpit. Only drawback is the price of admission of $160 retail
