Worthy of the Thomson name.

Thomson doesn’t like to rush things, so when our friends in the Southeast announced its forthcoming line of carbon fiber handlebars, well, needless to say, we were intrigued. You see, it’s a brand built on stunning machined aluminum goods, and the carbon fiber All Mountain riser handlebar is a serious departure. But, it’s built by the composite wizards at Toray, which built its reputation on aircraft components, so you know this is a bar that’s ready to take on everything you can throw at it. At 215g, it’s light enough for elite XC, but it’s strong enough for the most aggressive riders to attack hairy trails with full confidence.

Thomson’s handlebar lineup is the first of its components not built in its Georgia facility, and also the brand’s first foray into composite bicycle components. But don’t think that this translates into a lack of experience. Thomson’s aerospace roots come into play, as the All Mountain bars are made by Toray, the same plant that pushes out carbon fiber components for Boeing and Airbus. And to ensure a level of quality befitting the Thomson name, the bars are certified to EN and tested to DIN+ standards.

The bars are made using Nano Epoxy Resin for very high impact resistance. An EPS mandrel, unlike other manufacturers who commonly employ an inflatable bladder, is used during the layup and molding process to avoid wrinkles inside during molding. Three different types of carbon fiber are used, varying in tensile strength, and tensile modulus. This blend of fibers allows for a stiff, durable bar, without sacrificing the vibration damping characteristics that Thomson set out to achieve. For added strength, 1.5K woven impact ends prevent damage to the unidirectional fibers during impact, or when cutting the bars down to your preferred width.

This results in an incredibly strong structure with stress risers reduced to an absolute minimum. Structure is one thing, ergonomics and ride quality is another whole story. Because this is Thomson's first foray into carbon handlebars, they have the advantage of starting with a clean slate. And by working closely with athletes, Thomson has dialed in a shape that is destined to become a favorite of racers and recreational riders alike.

The Thomson All Mountain riser handlebar is available with a 31.8mm clamp diameter. It has a flat/0mm rise, and it's reversible with a -5mm rise for 29-inch riders looking for a long-slung racing position. Furthermore, it sports a 730mm width with six degrees of backsweep. It comes in the color Black.
