Keep it secure.

A secure place for your valuable cycling computer on your mountain bike is difficult to find. Until now, the best place has most likely, and unfortunately, been in your jersey pocket. Tate Lab's Bar Fly MTB 3.0 Mount changes that. The latest in its series of aftermarket cycling computer mounts is designed for off-road and all-terrain applications -- mountain bike, cyclocross, DH and enduro.

Designed with the same detail as its road and time-trial Bar Fly, Tate Labs' MTB 3.0 utilizes its signature 1/8th turn positive engagement technology to secure your computer. The mount clamps directly to the handlebars, placing your computer screen level no matter which stem you choose. In addition, it positions the device directly in the center of the handlebar for easier viewing. The MTB Bar Fly 3.0 accommodates virtually any stem -- negative rise and shorties included -- riders uses to refine their positions.

The 3.0 is manufactured in the USA out of Delrin, which is a stiff thermoplastic used in applications where durability is an absolute must. It has no screws to lose, and 'zero risk of over-clamping and crushing lightweight carbon bars.'

The Tate Labs Bar Fly MTN 3.0 has a 31.8mm handlebar clamp and is compatible with the Garmin Edge 200/500 and 510/800/810. It is available in Black.

Functional but not strong

I run a K-Edge adjustable steer tube mount on my trail bike and I bought one of these Bar Flys to run on my DH bike as it has a direct mount stem and not much room to try to make a steer tube mount work. I love my Garmin and am a huge data geek. On my first ride with this mounted to my M9, I had a low speed OTB. My Bar Fly was set up so the Garmin was behind the bars, above the stem. I went out the front of the bike after the bike stopped going forward (ain't inertia great?) and grazed the Bar Fly with my thigh as I exited the bike. The Garmin popped out and the Bar Fly snapped clean in two between the Garmin end and the handlebar clamp. Thankfully, my Garmin was tethered to the bar or it might not have survived without a scratch as it did. All I could do was pocket my Garmin, finish my run, and remove and toss the handlebar half of the Fly once back to my tools at the bottom. Spend a little more and go K-Edge.

Been running this for almost six months now. Very happy. It will loosen up a bit with hard MTB use, so just torque it down every few months.

The factory Garmin o-ring mount works okay. Although, after many dirty rides, the o-rings begin to exhibit some wear, stretch thin, and shift around when you play with the Garmin atop the stem. The great thing about the Bar Fly mount, is that your Garmin stays fixed once you torque down the allen screw, mounting the unit to your handlebars. Due to its plastic construction, carbon bars will not get marred or damaged from over-tightening. The design is simple, yet functional. The molded plastic part doesn't break the bank, and will last many years (probably outliving your bike). If not, there is a lifetime crash replacement guaranteed!! All you have to do is pay for shipping. How great is that?! I'm a happy camper!

I recently replaced my stem and bars, and my Edge 500 will no longer fit using the standard Garmin mount on my stem.

I do not want to mount the Garmin on my bars, and most of the other mounts for the Garmin put it out in front of the stem, which I do not like, so I am considering one of these. I was having trouble picturing what it would look like, so I found this pic. I hope it helps anyone else who might be having the same difficulty.

Big Papa, thanks for the image. I am about to buy a new garmin because mine got damaged last night when I crashed during a race. I was using a mount that put the computer in front of the bars and in a crash that is one of the things guaranteed to hit. My garmin popped off, shearing the tabs that make up it's retention system. Bye Bye Garmin. I will be purchasing one of these to go with a new 510.
