Agreeable.

Sugoi is one of the few vendors we carry that—in our admittedly cold-tolerant opinion—recommends its cold-weather kit for suitably cold temperatures. Maybe it's because Sugoi is Canadian, so it's designers are used to cycling in temperatures more on par to what we experience while the Mediterranean brands are used to, well, Mediterranean conditions. Whatever the case, when Sugoi recommends the RS 180 Men's Jacket for "when the weather is hovering around freezing," we're inclined to agree.

The jacket's title alludes to the key behind its cold-weather protection: 180 is a reference to the Firewall 180 material, which incorporates a wind-resistant laminate, a DWR-treated face fabric, and a brushed, thermal inner. The resulting membrane sandwich establishes a firewall against the elements by trapping body heat and protecting that trapped body heat from the wind-chill and precipitation that define winter cycling. As noted above, we feel that this combination is suitable for use in conditions into the 30s, but that range can be extended to below freezing with strategic layering.

Since the jacket is cut according to Sugoi's Racing Series (RS) fit, it's not quite as layer-friendly as the brands more relaxed jackets; however—as with the temperature recommendations—our experience with Sugoi is that the fit differs from the Mediterranean brands. Race fit in Italy can mean cut to fit the micro-climbers of the Euro peloton, but Sugoi's race fit is cut more for an all-around athletic build. Firewall 180's accommodating stretch helps here, too, allowing a bit more flexibility for additional insulation. Sugoi makes heavier jackets (there's a Firewall 220 material), but we think the ability to layer makes the mid-weight RS 180 the most versatile option.

The jacket is finished with a brushed collar lining to warm and protect your throat, and the two rear pockets zip closed to provide security and weather protection to your cargo. The RS 180 is also finished with reflective details to help keep you visible in the kind of low-light conditions that often accompany inclement weather or early morning departures in winter. These also tend to be the times when the jacket's protective qualities are most appreciated.
