For 2015, Stan's NoTubes made the surprising decision to take its multiple World Cup and World Championship winning ZTR Flow EX 27.5-inch Wheelset and … leave it virtually unchanged. Stan's has long been an early adopter in technologies like wide rims and — of course — tubeless setups. Given this willingness to pursue innovation, we're confident that, when Stan's does inevitably cook up some new tech, the wheels will see an overhaul as substantial as the previous edition's. But for now, why mess with a winning formula?

The Flow EX rims still enjoy the increased external and internal widths of 29.1 and 25.5 millimeters, respectively. They also get signature Bead Socket Technology (BST) redesign of their predecessors. The sidewalls remain 14% thicker than the previous iteration, and the spoke beds are 33% thicker, consigning spoke pull-through to the ghosts of history. All of these changes improve the Flow EX's durability, rigidity, and dent-resistance, making it the strongest rim in the NoTubes' line.

The new width also enhances tire volume and roundness while working with the redesigned BST for a tighter rim-to-tire seal. The extra girth was followed by a slight tweak to the internal arch's profile, providing even more lateral stiffness. Like the old Flow, Stan's NoTubes uses 6061 aluminum, and it's been drilled for 32 spokes with no eyelets.

The Flow EX rim is laced to a Stan's 3.30 HD hubset with butted steel spokes. The hubs house smooth-spinning chromoly cartridge bearings that ride on lightweight 7075 alloy axles. The rear hub body features large, 58mm flanges. Meanwhile, the drive side houses a hardened 30-point engagement ring, while the non-drive side is machined to reduce weight. The front hub also gets a 58mm flange in order to balance strength and weight.

The aluminum freehub is compatible with Shimano and SRAM cassettes, with an XX1 driver that's available separately. The wheelset comes with Stan's rim tape and valve stems installed for instant use — just add tires, sealant, and air. The front hub ships with a 20mm axle and the rear is 12x142mm. End caps are available separately to convert front to either 12mm and 15mm axles.

  • 20 points of engagement

One Of The Industry's Mainstays...

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

If there was ever a wheel that could be named The Most Indispensible Wheel Ever Made, it would be this one. This wheel comes stock on many builds from nearly every company for a few reasons: it's a solid wheelset that can take more hits than reasonable -- I've run a few sets into the ground and they'll still continue to roll, despite abuse that would crush another similarly-priced wheelsets. Secondly, these wheels are fairly stiff, low maintenance and easily managed when parts break or go missing. As one of the most common wheelsets on the market, any shop should have spokes, spoke nipples, etc. The third and most outstanding part? TUBELESS. Need I say more?
