Power time

SRM partnered with Shimano to build a new power system that's built around the increasingly popular 2x10 drivetrain configuration. Called the SRM XT 2x10 Powermeter Crankset, this power package provides the most accurate power readings available using SRM's tried-and-proven design. The move toward tracking power data in the mountain world was first realized by SRM when it noticed that many XC and endurance courses remain the same from year to year. Now, with the new power package, riders benefit from being able to record specific aspects of course layouts and structure their training schedules accordingly. Knowing exactly how many accelerations, lengths, and durations of key climbs, as well as average power data for a certain race, work to an athlete's advantage while preparing for these events.

The SRM unit that's been mated to the Shimano XT crankset relies on the recently-improved eight strain gauge design for measuring data. These eight strain gauges for the powermeter are a system of sensors that detect any resistance and vary their output when experiencing applied force. The next step is for the strain gauges to convert this data into electrical resistance so that it's able to be measured. The refinements to the system provide stellar results. The SRM XT 2x10 expresses an accuracy of +/- 1.5% between 30 and 255 rpm, with a wattage range between 0 and 4096 watts. The unit was rigorously tested in order to ensure maximum weatherproofing and durability both on the trail and race course. Additionally, it provides around 700 hours of battery life before requiring replacement.

The cranksets' Hollowtech II arms have been reshaped with an asymmetric design that now mirrors the sophistication of XTR. The right arm is pressed together with the hollow 24mm spindle at the factory, and the splined left crankarm mates to the spindle during installation. This is secured with perhaps Shimano's best detail -- two pinch bolts that secure the arm once the bearing preload is dialed in perfectly. In our experience, it's a superior design over the previous version in terms of installation, ride-quality, and durability.

The Shimano XT 2x10 Hollowtech II Crankset also provides lower weight compared to the triple chainring setup, and new gearing configurations cover what was once only attainable through the three-ring design. Shimano and SRM built the new 2x10 setup using RaceFace's lightweight chainrings. These were selected due to their seamless integration with the SRM unit, and they also deliver rapid, easy shifts that are made even faster due to the elimination of the ambidextrous middle chainring. The little ring is designed exclusively to allow the chain to go to the big and vice-versa. Neither has to do double duty. And with a Shimano asymmetric chain, the system is optimized throughout.

The SRM XT 2x10 is available with 175mm crankarms in the color Black. Additionally, SRM is providing this crankset in both a 40/28t and 38/26t configuration. The powermeter operates wirelessly with ANT+ Sport, and it does not include a CPU. However, it is compatible with PowerControl 7, and any other ANT+ Sport-compatible device. Also, please note that the bottom bracket is not included with this powermeter system.
