SRAM's pursuit of seamless and simple component integration leads to it continually innovating the component industry -- case in point being the XX1 group. As a whole, XX1 works as an efficient machine, but individually, each component plays a vital role in making this group the trendsetter that it is. The XX1 Crankset sets itself apart from others with its game-changing design and the simplicity that comes from using a single chainring.

Functionality, Q-factor, and compatibility offered by XX1 make it the standout component in the new SRAM arsenal. Carbon arms have been mated to a redesigned aluminum spider for a lightweight crank arm that doesn't require finessing of parts to make an optimal single-ring setup. The X-SYNC chainring is designed for maximum chain control, with each tooth being CNC-machined to support the chain's inner and outer links.

The machining process results in a variable thickness from tooth-to-tooth, so the chain and chainring essentially lock together as you pedal. However, the locking of the two doesn't inhibit pedal efficiency, and it eliminates the common ailments associated with running a single ring up front. What we love most is the liberation from chain guides in order to keep the chain in place on rugged, chain-slapping trails.

SRAM even goes as far as to say that you have a better chance of dropping your chain with a front derailleur than you do with the XX1 crank and chain combo. The new chainring's 76mm bolt circle diameter sets it apart from others in the SRAM catalog. This diameter emanated from a functionality standpoint, not as an afterthought of the new, universal spider shape.

Its design makes it simple to remove the chainring for maintenance or ratio changes. Gone are the days of finagling the chainring off the spider -- just unscrew the bolts, move the chainring off, and have the replacement on in minutes. Even better, SRAM has created six different chainring sizes that are compatible with the XX1 spider. Now, you can dial-in your range to match the trail, beforehand or on-the-fly.

And though the XX1 crank is designed to work optimally in tandem with the XX1 group, you can use the crank and a 10 speed chain to enjoy the benefits of running a single-speed or one-by-10 setup.

This GXP specific crank has a 156 Q-factor, and it's available in 170 and 175mm crank arm lengths. The SRAM XX1 Crankset comes with Black crank arms, a Silver spider, and a Silver chainring.

Hooray for innovation

really light, solid cranks. i ride all mountain/enduro and these have stood up the the beating just fine. the 156 q factor issupposed to be more effecient, but it depends on your natural stride as well as chainstay clearance with your frame. also, someone at sram was having a smart day when they decided to redesign the bolt holes to allow you to switch chainrings without pulling the crank. props.

Take a beating and still look pretty

These cranks are just beautiful the perfect compliment to the amazing XX1 drive train, I made the switch to XX1 this year (2013) and I am in love, I have been a long time X.0 user and have always thought the SRAM solution was unbeatable. But getting rid of the front derailleur and having such a wide range of gearing options in just 11 gears is absolute perfection. I can't imagine ever going back to the old system.

It's simple and simply works

I bought this crankset not for a fancy new XX1 bike, but to convert my current Santa Cruz Highball Carbon into a dedicated 1x10 bike. I used this crank (156 Q-Factor) on the Highball with a SRAM 11-speed chain, 10-speed X0 type-2 rear derailleur and 10-speed cassette. I have never, never dropped my chain. Even on my hardtail and the ultra-rough Southern Utah desert the chain has never come off. This crank is good for a 10 or 11-speed bike and is perfect. On my 29er I use the 32-tooth ring because I often do 5+ mile climbs. Anywhere else I'd probably switch to a 34-tooth, especially for racing in more flat terrain.

I built up my Highball with the drivetrain described above, and can confirm that it works flawlessly. I'm definitely not a "hacker" when it comes to setting up my bike-- I want everything to work together simply, reliably, and with minimal maintenance. While I was initially skeptical of mixing the XX1 with X0 components, the group of components Noah listed goes together without a hitch and hasn't let me down!

*The full XX1 gruppo includes a climbing cog that is about 20% easier than what you'll get with the mix-and-match 1x10 described above. While the 1x10 is mechanically flawless, if you spend a lot of time in your granny gear you would be well-advised to choose a full XX1 drivetrain.
