The new XG-1190 Cassette arguably holds the responsibility of being the defining component of SRAM's new Red 22 groupset. It carries over the beautiful engineering that defined the super light, silent, and precise XG-1090, with the addition of the 16T cog neatly tucked into the cassette's profile. This 16T is now the linking cog that delivers better cadence control as you hover within the middle block of the 11-speed cassette.

In order to fully understand exactly where this new XG-1190 comes from, we must first step back and examine the roots of the Red Cassette family. SRAM's original Red Cassette was an exceptional drivetrain component with only one downside: when installed on a deep carbon wheel or ridden amongst a group of riders on Red, it created a resounding cacophony that drowned out even the most concentrated thoughts. There was nothing inherently wrong with this cassette, known officially as the OG-1090. It was lightweight, it shifted crisply, and was resistant to wear over the course of prolonged use. But it was noisy due to its Powerdome construction, which acted like a phonograph that reverberated drivetrain clatter from the freehub and chain. And thus the SRAM Red XG-1090 X-Dome Cassette was born.

With the latest Powerdome X construction, the middle nine cogs on the new XG-1190 are machined from a single block of high-grade tool steel -- a technique similar to that of their popular XG-1099 mountain cassette. The cassette is then finished with two carefully machined aluminum cogs. The largest cog has a machined backplate to increase strength and improve stiffness—a definite advantage if this is your punchy, last-resort climbing gear. The whole cassette requires a machining process so complex and precise that each piece takes around seventy minutes to produce. But the final product is more than worth the effort—it is a hollow, inspiring piece of engineering that is both stiff and exceptionally lightweight. And excess noise is effectively dissipated, leaving you with nothing but the smooth, crisp, and reliable shifting SRAM Red is best known for.

To further reduce noise, SRAM also fitted an elastomer StealthRing between each cog to engage, dampen, and thereby eliminate any excess chatter from the chain. The rings are shaped to mesh with SRAM's new PC-Red 22 chain, and they do not compromise power transfer.

SRAM improved exactly where it needed, and the new SRAM Red XG-1190 X-Dome Cassette is a true upgrade to its predecessors while still remaining faithful to the SRAM Red pedigree that provides the lightest and arguably best-climbing groupset on the market. For smooth and flawless shifting across SRAM's machined X-Glide cassette teeth, and to run a drivetrain perfectly optimized for quiet operation with the StealthRings, SRAM recommends using its PC-Red 22 Chain. The cassette also includes an anodized, laser-etched aluminum lockring. Please note that the XG-1190 Cassette will only fit 11-speed compatible hub/freehub bodies.

Works great with Campy

This cassette is very light, ring spacing is the same as campy 11 and it worked perfectly using an 11-30 with a record rear derailleur even though campy says they only support their 12-29 with 29 being their max cassette ring size

Unanswered Question

Will the new SRAM 11 speed 11-32 cassette work with the original SRAM front deraillier (10 speed two ring)?

What is the build date on your 11x32 XG1190s ? I have noted on some blogs that there are issues with some build dates and Sram replaced the cassettes..

There are no issues with the build dates but these are as new as you'll find anywhere.

I ordered mine late July and box reflects build date of Week 26 2015. Very smooth, and quiet.

Any experience with the long term durability of the 28t aluminum cog? Are the aluminum cogs replaceable? I use a 11-28t due to numerous hills and spend a good amount of time on the 28t.

It's going to wear out faster than the other cogs but not by a lot, since the load is being spread amongst the most teeth. Not replaceable as far as I know. SRAM 1180/1195/1199 (mountain) cassettes have aftermarket replaceable cogs though (just the big aluminum one).

Is this Cassette compatible with the new Dura Ace group? Im thinking going to the 11-30 SRAM cassette as Dura Ace only gets to 11-28, I hear the Short cage Dura Ace can handle the 30. Would you recommend this set up?

No I would not. DA only makes a short cage rear derailleur - which is only mean to handle a max of 27 tooth rear cassette. I would not run larger than this for a short cage rear derailleur. Contact me at and I can help further.

all i can say is I run the 11-30 on my Dura Ace Di2 (current gen) w/ 50/34 up just fine

i run a 11-30 with a DA9000 short cage. takes a bit of adjustment but it works near flawlessly. B-screw isnt even fully maxed on my hanger.

I agree with the comments above. I run the 11-30 with a short cage Ultegra di2 on two different bikes with zero issues.

Did run the cassette on the short cage DA. I agree. thanks ZERO ISSUES. ( only complaint is the increased noise due to the construction of the cassette. )

    I swapped two bikes to the newest SRAM Red 10-speed last year (Why have you forsaken me SRAM?!) and couldn't be happier with the performance. The new group is well thought out but the front derailleur and cassette are the stand outs of the litter.

    The way the first generation "powerdome" cassette was engineered made it a defacto drum and the level of noise produced could be disarming to you and other riders. SRAM went out of their way to make this the quietest cassette known and it is. I love hearing the wurr of a well oiled chain and now I can.
