You're rolling over boulders like a tank. You line up to take on a sketchy steep climb, give it a burst of power, and then realize your chain isn't connected to the drivetrain anymore. You lurch to an abrupt stop, boil over into a rage, and consider the merits of hucking your bike, riderless, down the hillside into oblivion. The SRAM X9 Type 2 Rear Derailleur helps prevent dropped chains and limits chain slap by incorporating a clutch mechanism that controls chain tension and stabilizes the rear derailleur cage.
Shimano's Shadow Plus design, which is engineered to produce a similar chain-stabilizing effect, preceded SRAM's Type 2 design in reaching the marketplace. However, Type 2 technology differs from its competition in a key way. Rather than opting for an adjustable friction band, SRAM put a Roller Bearing Clutch in their Type 2 derailleurs. The clutch comes pre-set from the factory to provide a certain amount of friction inside the derailleur cage pivot. This friction keeps the cage from bouncing up and down over rocky trails and de-tensioning the chain. Because it's pre-set at the factory, SRAM's Type 2 clutch can't be disengaged or adjusted like Shimano's Shadow Plus mechanism. That being said, the Type 2 clutch is self-lubricating, and there are no external moving parts, so unlike the Shadow Plus system, it's designed to be maintenance-free. The Type 2 mechanism adds about 30 grams to the weight of a standard X9 rear derailleur.
A unique feature of the Type 2 system is that its Cage Lock technology allows you, with the push of a button, to lock the derailleur cage in an extended position. While it may not be a game changer, this is a nice feature that allows for easier-than-ever rear wheel installation. There's no need to worry if you accidentally leave the derailleur cage locked; it will return to normal operating position when you hit your first bump. Another benefit of the Cage Lock is that it makes chain installation a bit easier; you don't have to maintain a consistent pulling force on the cage while joining the two chain ends.
SRAM's Exact Actuation Technology facilitates consistent shifting through all gears, including 36-tooth rear cogs. The X9 Type 2 is a tad heavier than the stepped-up X0 Type 2, but it'll leave you some cash for dog food. The X9 Type 2 uses sealed bushings in the pulleys and has an alloy cage. The SRAM X9 Type 2 Rear Derailleur comes in Black/grey and in 3 cage lengths: Short, Medium, and Long. SRAM suggests the short cage for downhill use, Medium cage for 2 x 10 use, and Long cage for 3 x 10 use.

With respect to your conduct on the Site or while using the Site Services, you agree not to: (a) attempt to disguise the origin of any User Content transmitted to the Site Services whether through the Site or any third party site; (b) act in any manner that negatively affects other users' ability to use the Site and Site Services; (c) impersonate any person or entity, including without limitation, a manufacturer or owner of any product, or falsely state or otherwise misrepresent your affiliation with a person or entity; (d) interfere with the Site or Site Services, or servers or networks connected to the Site or Site Services, or disobey any requirements, procedures, policies, or regulations of networks connected to the Site or Site Services; (e) upload, post, or otherwise transmit any User Content that with respect to the Site Services: (i) is not relevant to the product, service, person or entity being reviewed; (ii) you do not have a right to transmit under any law or under contractual or fiduciary relationships (by way of example but not limitation, inside information, proprietary and confidential information learned or disclosed as part of employment relationships or under nondisclosure agreements); (iii) contains software viruses or any other computer code, files or programs designed to interrupt, destroy or limit the functionality of any computer software or hardware or telecommunications equipment; or (iv) is unsolicited or unauthorized advertising, promotional materials, "junk mail," "spam," "chain letters," "pyramid schemes," or any other form of solicitation.
User Content does not reflect the views of Competitive Cyclist, and Competitive Cyclist does not represent or guarantee the truthfulness, accuracy, completeness, timeliness, integrity, quality or reliability of any User Content, nor does Competitive Cyclist endorse or support any opinions expressed in any User Content. In no event shall Competitive Cyclist have or be construed to have any responsibility or liability for or in connection with any User Content, Any gear reviews and/or product ratings submitted on the Site, if displayed, are displayed for entertainment and informational purposes only. Under no circumstances will Competitive Cyclist be liable in any way for any User Content, including but not limited to, any errors or omissions in any User Content, or for any loss or damage of any kind incurred as a result of the use of any User Content posted, emailed or otherwise transmitted via the Site or Site Services.
If Competitive Cyclist determines, in our sole and absolute discretion, that you or any User Content you submit violates this Agreement, we reserve the right, at any time, without notice and without limiting any and all other rights Competitive Cyclist may have under this Agreement, to: (a) refuse to allow you to submit further User Content; (b) remove and delete your User Content; (c) revoke your registration and right to use the User Content Submission Features; and (d) use any technological, legal, operational or other means available to enforce the terms of this Agreement, including, without limitation, blocking specific IP addresses or deactivating your registration, access to the Site and Site Services using your e-mail address, and your user name and password. Without limiting the foregoing, once User Content is submitted to the Site, Competitive Cyclist may take any or no action with respect to such User Content, including without limitation, deleting, editing, modifying, rejecting, or refusing to post such User Content, but is under no obligation to offer you the opportunity to edit, delete or otherwise modify User Content once it has been submitted. Competitive Cyclist shall have no duty to attribute authorship of User Content to you and shall not be obligated to enforce any form of attribution by third parties.
If, despite the foregoing assignment and transfer of rights in the User Content, it is determined that you retain moral rights (including the rights of attribution or integrity) in the User Content, you hereby declare that: (a) you do not require that any personally identifying information be used in connection with the User Content or any derivative works of or upgrades or updates thereto; (b) you have no objection to the publication, use, modification, deletion and exploitation of the User Content by Competitive Cyclist or its licensees, successors or assigns; (c) you forever waive and agree not to claim or assert any entitlement to any and all moral rights of an author in any of the User Content; and (d) you forever release Competitive Cyclist, and its licensees, successors and assigns from any claims that you could otherwise assert against Competitive Cyclist by virtue of any such moral rights.
You are prohibited from violating the security of any system or network compromising the Site or the Site Services, including but not limited to the following: (a) unauthorized access to or use of data, systems, or networks, including any attempt to probe, scan or test the vulnerability of the Site or Site Services or to breach security or authentication measures; (b) unauthorized monitoring of data or traffic on the Site or of the Site Services; (c) interference with the Site or Site Services including without limitation, any type of flooding technique or deliberate attempt to overload the system such as denial or service attacks; (d) forging of a message header or any part of a message header; or (e) using manual or electronic means to avoid any use or access limitation placed on this Site or the Site Services. Such violations may result in criminal or civil liability.
Competitive Cyclist reserves the right to report any activity or persons that Competitive Cyclist suspects has violated any law or regulation to appropriate law enforcement officials, regulators, or other appropriate third parties (including the disclosure of appropriate subscriber information). Competitive Cyclist may also cooperate with appropriate law enforcement agencies to assist in the investigation and prosecution of any illegal conduct. Indirect or attempted violations of this Agreement and actual or attempted violations thereof by a third party on behalf of any user shall be considered violations of this Agreement by such user.
The first few minutes riding on this derailleur, it was immediately noticeable the lack of chain noise. Worked well for about four months then the Type 2 clutch basically stopped working turning it into a regular derailleur. Thanks to BC.com's excellent customer service, I was quickly back up and running.
Amazing what the "clutch" (technically just a very strong cage spring) can do for drivetrain noise and chain retention. This feature alone is worth the upgrade to 10spd. Solid, accurate shifts that keep a tune and shed mud and minor hits with ease. So basically all the stuff you like about SRAM, but dead silent.
Sneak up on unsuspecting foes on the trail...or just enjoy a suddenly and surprisingly silent ride. So far this thing has drastically (anecdotal) reduced my dropped chains and I don't hear a peep from drivetrain, even through braking bumps.
Also, I'm a huge fan of the Cage Lock feature. It's easier than ever to install a new chain or pull the rear wheel. Now that I'm spoiled, it'll take something drastic for me to go back.
Chap slap is a thing of the past. I haven't had a single issue with dropping a chain or a noisy chanline after getting this derailleur. The spring is way stronger than that of the previous SRAM derailleurs.
I am avid X9 user but I must say these new type two derailleurs are way beyond the old style. Its like I am riding my quite single speed, no chain slap at all along with quiet shifting makes this a must. The X9 is crisp and cleaning shifting without breaking the bank for XO.
I've always been a fan of the SRAM shifting, especially since they always had stiffer springs in them (something Shimano has remedied with the Shadow stuff) ... but the type 2 clutch takes it to the next level. I've ridden it about a month now and chain slap is pretty much gone away and chain is staying on the bike now. No more lost chains (I don't run anything chain guide wise). Woould love to put these on my DH bike just due to the lack of noise alone.
