From component to component the storyline between Force and Rival is the same: Force and Rival products are mechanically and functionally very closely matched. The only meaningful distinction is their weight. Rival provides similar lock-up power and speed modulation as Force; they're built with similiar "skeletonized" caliper arms to reduce weight; they use the same brake pad compound to optimize stopping power in both wet and dry conditions. In short, blindfolded it's impossible to feel an on-the-bike difference between the two.

Aside from less extensive machining of the arms, Rival brake calipers lack the stainless steel mounting bolt and pivot hardware that Force uses. This allows the Force calipers to come in just a few grams lighter. And Force has a gray finish, while these second-generation Rival calipers have a black finish.

  • Dual pivots add braking power and enhance progressive feel for more precise modulation
  • Fully adjustable for a customized feel
  • Cold-forged arms and stainless steel pivots will last for years
  • Indexed quick-release provides quick, precise settings

Surprisingly Solid

For the price, you really get a lot of your bang for your buck here. Weight isn't to shabby at 288g (not too light either, but there's far worse). Plenty sturdy construction and they consistently apply ample force for smooth braking. Great buy for a backup set, upgrade on your commuter or value brakes for a new build on a budget.

Are these the short reach (39-49mm) or long reach (49-57mm) variety?

This is the short reach Caliper ... 39-49mm.

Quality/Caliber befitting SRAM Rival

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Since the introduction of SRAM Rival group, I've always considered it a slightly lighter brother of Shimano's 105 group. Both are marked by their excellent reliability and durability. There are certainly lighter options out there, but its tough to beat the price/quality of Rival. These Rival brakes come with an easy to use barrel adjuster, simple finish, and replaceable brake pads. This is an easy upgrade from lesser OE brakes, and would be perfectly at home on an otherwise SRAM Force or even Shimano equipped bike. Not much more to say about brakes other than that they stop well without second thought.
