Crank with the big boys.

After SRAM put the works on its fantastic Red drivetrain, bumping up the number of potential gear combinations to 22 and refining the heck out of the system at the same time, it was only a matter of time before the rest of the company's road drivetrain family followed suit. Slotting in just below its also-excellent Force group, Rival now offers 22 gears to those of us who perhaps can't afford the carbon-heavy stuff at the higher price points, and the SRAM Rival 22 BB30 Crankset runs the show for those who want to install the system on their BB30-equipped framesets.

Featuring super-stiff, 5mm 7075-T6 CNC-machined aluminum chainrings, the crank utilizes the same X-Glide R precision-shifting technology pioneered on SRAM's revolutionary XX mountain groupset. Shifting is not just smooth, it's lightning-fast, with no "shift lag" as you wait for the chain to connect with the ramp pins on upshifts. The aluminum arms join a machined alloy spider, creating a tremendously stiff package that doesn't weigh all that much more than its carbon equivalents.

The Rival 22 crankset, like all SRAM 22-speed drivetrain cranks, is designed to work with any of the company's Yaw front derailleurs, which rotates the cage as it shifts, improving shifting precision and eliminating the need for trimming to avoid chain contact with the cage's rear edges. The crankset, chain, and front derailleur are designed to work in unison, and when properly configured, it's one of the finest drivetrains at any price point.

The SRAM Rival 22 BB30 Crankset has a 110mm bolt circle diameter and is designed for BB30-ready framesets. It does not include a bottom bracket. It can be ordered with 170mm, 172.5mm, and 175mm crankarms, and with 46/36-, 50/34-, and 52/36-tooth chainring combinations. A 172.5mm version with the 52/36-tooth combo weighs 873 grams. We and SRAM both strongly recommend the use of SRAM 22-speed chains and front derailleurs be used in conjunction with SRAM 22-speed drivetrains for best performance.
