Description

Ten-speed performance.

In SRAM's chain hierarchy, only the PC-1051 and PC-1091 chains are made with corrosion-resistant nickel plating on both the inner and outer links. What's the difference between this PC-1051 and their top of the line PC-1091 then? Where the 1091 has hollow pins, the 1051 uses solid, chrome hardened pins at the link pivots. Sure it's not quite as light, but you'll save enough money to build your wheels with alloy nipples instead. And from a performance standpoint, you'll be money ahead.

SRAM has done some subtle reshaping of their outer plates to make their chains run quieter. This PC-1051 is made specifically for 10-speed drivetrains, and like its fancier hollow-pinned relatives, it mates perfectly with the tooth shaping and pickup/release points on SRAM's cassettes and chainrings for flawless shifting performance.

You can install a PC-1051 chain without special tools thanks to SRAM's PowerLock connecting link. No other sub-6mm chain in the marketplace shares this feature. And unlike the occasional headaches we're all familiar with when it comes to Shimano HG pins and Wippermann connecting links, the PowerLock link is as strong or stronger than any other link on the chain, and it won't hinder shift quality in the least.

The SRAM PC-1051 Chain is compatible with both SRAM and Shimano 10-speed drivetrains. Please note that while the PowerLock installation can be done tool-free, it's recommended to be used only once due to the extremely close tolerances required by the narrow 10-speed design. So if you must break your chain for maintenance reasons, a new 10-speed PowerLock link will be required to reassemble it.

  • PowerLock provides quick and simple one-time chain removal and installation

A great budget chain.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is by far one of the best values as far as chains go. Price is right and it shifts much better and last a lot longer than comparably priced options.

No need for bling

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Keep it simple. Simple, functional, and durable. This chain is a great option for 10 speed drive trains. While it may not have the nicest coating or lightest weight, it will get you home and be a solid, reliable component.

My Preferred SRAM Chain

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

16g's is the advertised weight difference between the 1091 and 1051 chain.Same Ni plated inner and outer plates and no hollow link. The slight increase in price over the 1031 to get better wear and corrosion resistance thanks to the Ni platting and a very small weight penalty over the 1091, thats a no brainer.

Perfectly adequate chain

I run the SRAM 50-series chains on all my bikes, because it's half the price of the 90 series, and in the 10-speed version, less than 20 grams heavier. I love the powerlink/masterlink, and the ability to fix it trailside with incredible ease, but I also haven't broken one of these chains, yet. The powerlink makes it a lot less finicky than Shimano's chain pins, as well.
