Problem, meet solution.

RockShox's new RS-1 fork has literally turned bicycle suspension upside down, introducing an inverted, motorcycle-style fork chassis to the mountain biking world. In doing so, engineers achieved greatness, but along the way created a problem that needed a solution — how to keep two independently-moving fork lowers stiff enough for ultimate control without making them too heavy. The answer comes in the form of several associated technologies and a new standard collectively called Predictive Steering, and the SRAM Predictive Steering RS-1 Front Hub is where it starts.

While it doesn't actually predict your steering input, the system is so stiff and reliable that it may as well. To adequately unify the new RS-1's two lower stanchions, a simple quick-release mechanism wouldn't do. Heck, even the company's own 15mm Maxle system wasn't rigid enough on its own to meet the standards set for the new fork. Ever the tinkerers, SRAM devised an almost entirely new front hub standard that employs a 110mm (as opposed to the standard 100mm) spacing at the dropouts. The 15mm Maxle Ultimate thru-axle is used, this time joining forces with the new Torque Tube within the Predictive Steering hub to create a virtually untwistable fork/hub interface.

While the hub can't be converted to any other front hub standards (it is, after all, dedicated for use with the RockShox RS-1 fork), you'll be happy to learn that it weighs only 165 grams and comes in 28- and 32-spoke hole versions. Build up the wheelset of your dreams to match the technical prowess of the new RS-1, and leave the rest up to Predictive Steering.

The SRAM Predictive Steering RS-1 Front Hub is compatible only with the RockShox RS-1 fork, which is currently available only for 29-inch mountain bike wheels. The hub comes only in the color Black and is only compatible with 6-bolt brake rotors.
