It has arrived. One-by drivetrains have been part of the mountain bike scene for a few years now, and singlespeed racing in both mountain and cyclocross disciplines has a growing following. SRAM took the best of both, durablity from mountain biking and simplicity of the singlespeed, and developed its new Force CX1 groupset specifically for cyclocross and gravel road assaults.
The arms of the Force CX1 were constructed from unidirectional carbon fiber. This method of carbon lay-up, although more time-consuming than a multi-directional weave, allows for a crankset that is extra rigid. This helps ensure that power is transferred to the drivetrain more efficiently rather than being absorbed into the bottom bracket. Uni-directional carbon also allows SRAM to reduce the amount of carbon used which effectively, reduces the weight. This construction has trickled down from SRAM's Red Quarq design. Additionally, the spindle is incorporated into the non-driveside arm. The reduced weight, but increased stiffness allowed SRAM to rotate the spider to take advantage of the rigid crank arm.
The arms are matched to a forged alloy spider which is both lightweight and durable. The crankset accommodates chainrings from 38-46 tooth, sold separately.
The SRAM Force CX1 BB30 Crankarm is designed to fit, as the name implies, a BB30 bottom bracket. It is available in three lengths: 170, 172.5, and 175mm. It is sold without the chainring.
