All cold-weather cycling outfits start here.

Sportful recognizes that tailoring your outfit to the conditions of any given day of cold-weather riding can be an exercise in managing minutia. Even two degrees Fahrenheit in either direction might mean a totally different top, or it might make the difference between knee warmers and tights. The manufacturer now offers the Protest Softshell Jacket to give us the flexibility to dress for anything that the fall, winter, and spring might throw our way.

The Protest's front consists of panels of Softshell fabric strategically distributed to fend off the elements. Softshell is wind and water-resistant, breathable, and presents a soft, fleece lining to your skin. It also grants just a touch of stretch to allow for comfortable movement. The jacket's leeward side is TDTXP, an insulating and wicking fabric that omits Lycra, which makes it more durable but less flexible. Sportful arranges this material to capitalize on its protection and comfort without feeling restrictive.

The jacket isn't equipped to handle winter's worst on its own, but it is cut to facilitate layering. You have the flexibility of wearing it alone into the low-50s or high-40s, depending on how you like your body temperature, or adding one or even two thermal layers underneath to ride well into the 30s. The more accommodating cut and classic styling means this jacket also rides well on singletrack. The construction is rounded out with a zippered chest pocket, two zippered rear pockets, and a collar that's high enough to cover most cyclists' necks. Reflective piping on the rear pockets helps keep you visible in low-light conditions.

The Sportful Protest Softshell Jacket - Men's is available in seven sizes ranging from X-Small to XXX-Large in the colors Black, Black/white, and Black/yellow fluo.

Nice jacket, not perfect

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: Small

I bought this jacket to serve as a high-visibility alternate to my dark blue team-issue winter jacket. The colors on the fluo version are very bright but not "fluo" in the traditional sense. More iridescent. It's a cool color. The fit and finish of this piece is very nice. It looks like it will hold up to many years of use. I really like the sleeve cuffs, as they have some stretchy fabric that easily seals at your gloves.
The jacket is not perfect, however. First, I realize that this is intended to be an outer layer (on top of potentially several base layers) so it should be a little bigger, the waist is definitely too wide for me. Bear in mind that I have a climber's build, so this is a common problem for me. Second, the zipper. At this price point, for a winter-weather piece, I would have expected a large zipper that is easy to use with gloves. Nope. Not only is it on the wrong side of the jacket, but the zip tab is barely big enough to grasp with bare fingers, let alone winter gloves. I also expected a zipper that can be undone from the bottom to make accessing any pockets on the inner layer easier. Finally, I would have preferred unzippered pockets on the back. That's just a personal preference I think; others may find the back pockets an attractive feature.
As far as warmth, this jacket did not disappoint. I set out for a foggy 2 hour ride at 35 degrees F with a thin merino base layer, and was actually too warm. It wasn't windy, but it seems pretty impervious to unwanted airflow.

Reliable Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I've had this jacket for over a month and have worn it numerous times. In fact, I wore it for my ride this morning. The temperature was 35F and it kept me nice and warm. Underneath, I had a base layer, short-sleeve jersey and arm warmers, and it kept me warm enough.

As far as the fit goes, I had to order an XL because I am 5'10, 180 lbs. and Large was a bit too snug. Ultimately, the jacket fits great and is fairly breathable. I like how it fits the body, but do not necessarily like how the arms fit - they are a bit bulky.

I am a fan of the front pocket, which I use for my phone, and the back two pockets, which provide enough space to bring along the essentials on your ride (i.e. pump, tube, wallet, keys, Cliff bar, etc.). This is my only cold-weather jacket, and I use it for commuting as well as general riding.

Great cycling jacket

Fits great. Has wrist gaiters and a well fitted collar which work great to keep out the cold. Very wind proof. Perfect jacket for wet days and I plan on making this my outer layer for winter rides and commuting. Only complaint is there is not much reflectivity, but I wear a reflector vest.
