Spring may be a long way away, but for some of us, the love of pavé lasts all year long. If your cycling routes are rough enough to rival the hardships of the northern classics, then Speedplay's new Zero Pavé Titanium pedals are your ticket to a worry-free ride. Used by the pro peloton since 2006, these pedals have carried the pros to the finish line in races from Siena to Roubaix, Brugge to Wevelgem, so you can rest assured that the folks at Speedplay have done their due diligence in designing, testing, and refining them. While it's likely just a coincidence of design, we think it's appropriate that the pedals resemble a medieval axe because they serve as a perfect weapon against the rough conditions that cause other pedal systems to fail.
Like the rest of the Zero line, the Pavé's locking mechanism does not rely on spring tension for locking security, so while you can easily clip in, accidentally clipping out is virtually impossible. They afford from zero to 15 degrees of adjustable float. While the pedal design's aesthetic is a radical departure from Speedplay's usual look, the cleats use the same inverted platform design that defines the brand. They're safe for walking on unpaved surfaces and they mount onto all three- and four-hole cycling shoes, no adapters or kits required, so you can ride any shoe you want without worrying about what the sole looks like.
The Speedplay Zero Pavé Titanium pedals have a spindle length of 50 millimeters, three millimeters shorter than their stainless counterparts, and a claimed weight that's 42 grams lighter per pair. Speedplay's recommended rider weight limit for these pedals is 185 pounds.
