Description

Speedplay Pedals -- what can we say, we love them. But for all the benefits that conjure this emotion, they have one slight price to pay. The cleats always work best when they're clean and well-lubed. Mud, dirt, and muck have no place in a Speedplay cleat/pedal system. But we're not selling them under the pretense that they're anything but one of the world's finest road pedal systems. And that, they are.

If you ride Speedplays and enjoy a good from-the-gun first lap breakaway in your local criteriums, then you'll want to lube them regularly to ease the transition into your pedals so you can clip in and hammer to the first corner. Speedplay SP-Lube is specially formulated exactly for this purpose. It's neither grease, Tri-Flow, nor powdered graphite. Grease and other wet petroleum based lubes attract way too much dirt, and graphite lacks the penetration qualities of a liquid to get into the recesses of the cleat/spring pocket.

Speedplay SP-Lube goes on wet and dries instantly leaving a layer of bonded lubrication on the working parts of the cleat. Most importantly, it does not attract dirt and grit. Your cleats will work better and last longer.

Must have!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Last season I was stuck on the road without this lube. After about 100kms in pouring rain, my cleats and pedals seized up and it was extremely difficult to clip in and out. The next day we had another 100+km ride and after a bit of lube, clipping in and out was a breeze. Since then, in questionable weather I will never ride without some lube in my back pocket. It's one of the drawbacks of using the awesome speedplay cleat/pedal system, but still worth it!

Must have for Speedplay pedals

Remember to shake that bottle! And use it every other ride.

Speedplay pedal lube.

This lubricant I so important and helpful in keeping the pedals on your shoes working properly and safely. When clipping in your pedals to your bike, remember, you are using a mechanical device with a spring, which wears and dries out after use. If the locks on the cleats of your shoes dry out they won't latch on to the pedals properly and worse yet, if they don't latch on properly, they can pop off the pedal when riding! So, lubricate your pedals, often!
